The tunnel was finally discovered after the DOE performed a survey on a sewage problem which turned out to be caused by a pipe Kerr had hit accidentally, causing sewage to leak into his tunnel over five years. The judge questioned Kerr’s wife as to why she never smelt the sewage odours from her husband.
Mrs Kerr simply shrugged.

You see, most people in this world just stumble around, lazy, oblivious to past and present, and completely lacking any vision of future potentials. Most of us just occupy space and take up oxygen, we're here, then we're gone, leaving, perhaps, a few terrible kids and some memories behind.
Then, there are cats like this guy who just go out there and get shite done.

I choose to believe in Patsy Kerr, who climbed through 800 feet of clean tunnel and came out the other side shite faced.

If his wife is such deep sleeper, why didn't he just walk to the Pub like a normal person? I don't see how the tunnel helped him in anyway.
Sneaking out & walking to the Pub every night = Alcoholic
Sneaking to the Pub through a secret tunnel under your bed = AWESOME!!!

well she didn't notice the sewer stench either so i'm guessing she's not exactly keeping house.

DAMNIT. For once can the OT Detectives take a break and allow us to have a hero for five minutes. I am hereby officially ignoring all facts and links to the contrary whilst I worship this gentleman and tip a drink to him this afternoon.

This man is an American hero.

Exactly what I was thinking. If she wakes up and he's gone, it really doesn't matter how he got there... he's still gone.

Why would he ever use a spoon?

Because it hurts more.
ETA: This guy obviously isn't in it for the logic (e.g., he could have just walked to the pub, so why would have use any digging tool), he is in it for the challenge.

What are rebel songs? Was he singing Dixie?
County Armagh was/is the heart of the violent IRA movements within Northern Ireland. At the height of The Troubles in the 1970's and 1980's, it was one of the most violent places on earth. There's a really good book about it called Bandit Country.
