‘Shawshank Husband’ Dug Tunnel From Bedroom To Pub Over 15 Years

If his wife is such deep sleeper, why didn't he just walk to the Pub like a normal person? I don't see how the tunnel helped him in anyway.

How do you sneak a tunnel boring machine ANYWHERE, much less into a tunnel that starts in your bedroom?
