They are always near when you are swimming in the Gulf. Good thing is that you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than getting attacked.

Took this on Saturday from the pier.

On a sunny day like that, I’d take my chance with the lightning. You can swim in that water.

Sharks are scavengers. They are always present near bait fish. A pier is always a great place for an easy meal where a splashing hooked fish being reeled in, is an easy target, and frustrated fisherman dump their bait. They like to trap small bait fish along the shoreline.

I'm more of a pool guy.

I don’t want to be struck by lighting or eaten mauled by a shark.

We were on the beach at Boca Grande and there was a 4 ft tarpon dead that had washed almost up on the beach. Here comes an 8 ft big dark shadow right to it. Went up and down the beach for about 20 minutes and kept coming back for a bite of that tarpon. I'm talking 10-15 ft out in about 2 ft of water. Was pretty cool.

I hate it when people say that.

People in the water on that day are vastly more likely to be attacked by a shark than struck by lightning.

When I was young and dumb, I would swim out to the 2nd sandbar.

Now I only go waist deep. To pee.

The rules are simple:
-you don’t go to the 2nd sandbar
-you don’t swim in inlets, marinas or piers
-you don’t swim in bait fish
-don’t swim in murky water or low light

Most sharks don’t pose any threat whatsoever including hammerheads.

Per grok its pretty close

30-40 shark attacks in us per year

20-30 people get struck by lightning doing water activities per year.

But watch out for dolphins. They're the rapists of the sea.

I’d rather be raped by a dolphin than bitten by a shark. My butthole has been through worse

My wife is completely unreasonable about the beach and sharks. Drives me nuts.

That actually strikes me as a remarkably low number.
