If history serve me, I believe President Theodore Roosevelt was said to have intervened and "saved" college football, in response to calls for banning the sport because of extreme violence and 18-19 fatalities and over 100 seriously injured in 1905. He formed a commission to formulate rules to "clean up" the sport.
