Bombing of Dresden

I think the issue people had with Dresden was that it wasn't really seen as advancing the war effort, regardless of the industry that was present there. Dresden has a really rich history and was a really beautiful place before the bombing. The city was essentially a giant refugee center in 1945.

Since it was in East Germany, the reconstruction was largely done in that Soviet-style.

Japanese soldiers stationed on various islands in the pacific continued to "fight" the war as far up to 1974. We had to drop the bomb. The japanese are a completely different breed then the germans.

The firebombing raids were in part out of plain frustration. The new b29 could bomb at such a high altitude than previous bombers. The winds were so high we could not hit shite from that altitude. At that point our bombing campaign of the Japanese mainland was largely impart a failure. Curtis Lemay said f*** this and hold my beer. He sent 334 B -29 with no lights flying low at night strapped up with napalm. Needless to say we didn't miss that time.

Go to Wiki, read The Rape Of Nanking. It will give any apologists a better idea of what our future held if the bombs were not dropped.

Disclaimer-It is a long read and the rest of your day will be ruined.

Nanking was just one incident, what they did to the Korean Peninsula, Port Author, etc. etc. The Japanese were something else.

These two statements contradict each other. We were at war with a nation which would apparently never surrender. It saved, in total, countless American lives, not to mention it overall undoubtedly saved more Japanese lives than it cost, too.

We also saved millions of Japanese civilians that would have died if we invaded . Between our regular bombings and their belief in the deity of the emperor, an invasion would have cost many more Japanese lives than the bombs and its not close .

War is a dirty business. We bombed Berlin, Hamburg and other German cities back to the stone age.. Many men women and children died as a result, as did many men women and children in London and other English towns.

I've seen widely divergent estimates on the bombing of Dresden. Anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 deaths.

Want to shut a German up when they are dissing America? Just tell them how much you admire what a modern society Germany is. Dresden, for example, is a city that displays such amazing modern architecture.

They do not contradict each other. You can be not proud of something and still consider it a necessary decision.

Slaughtering innocent civilians should never be something you are proud of, but that decision was unfortunately one that had to be made to save millions.

Not to mention if we don’t drop the bombs in 1945 I have no doubt nuclear weapons would have been used during the Cold War.

Before that. Germany was in the process of developing their own nuclear weapon and would have surely used it on Great Britain or possible the USA.

Truman had to use the bomb. After all the billions spent to research, develop and build it, and the huge number of American casualties in the invasion, he would have been crucified for not using a weapon that could have ended the war.

My Grandfather was in the 20th AF, 40th BG, 25th BS. If your best friend's dad was on Tinian, then he was in the 20th AF.
