...Bock's Car dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki. My Dad was on Okinawa preparing for the invasion of Japan, which was rendered moot by two atomic bombs.

Not the proudest but it got the job done and ended the war.

We still have Purple Heart medals in stock that were made in preparation for the Invasion of Japan.

I doubt I’d be here (planet Earth, not specifically the OT). Pops was scheduled to hit the Honshu Plain in the ‘46 Invasion of the Home Islands and probably die there.

You can thank Truman for me being here. Or cuss him.

Neither he nor I care.

The launching site for both atomic raids.

Even troops in the ETO were preparing for the invasion, not just those in the PTO and CBI.

Japan woke the sleeping giant. Their fault, not ours.

I am proud Truman had the fortitude to follow through with it and save millions of lives. He did the right thing and the world has avoided major wars because of the thought of it happening again. Wise the hell up and read.

Truman had a pretty rough decision. If he decided not to drop the bomb and word got out to the people it would have ended him. You gotta kind of look at it from the point of view of a nation that had lost a lot of people. yeah, we were relatively unscathed in comparison to a lot of the rest of the allies but still. he couldn't really not drop the bomb.

We didn't start the damn war. I don't get the apologetics that the more recent generations have succumbed to. Maybe you didn't have a grandfather in the Pacific theater like I did.
I hate that it had to happen that way, but they didn't have to crash planes into Pearl Harbor either.

I get it. My dad was in the navy sailing to the far east when the war was over.
Don't call me unamerican because I'm not, but we incinerated thousands of innocent women and children.

Hundreds of thousands. An invasion of Japan would have made D Day look like a picnic.

Not to mention if we don’t drop the bombs in 1945 I have no doubt nuclear weapons would have been used during the Cold War.

With all the debate on how bad the atomic bombs were and were they worth it. Most people don't know that on March 9 ,1945 we fire bombed Tokyo. Killing over 100,000 civilians. Deadliest air raid in human history.

Ask the marines who were on Okinawa and Iowa Jima. Or tarawa, peleliu, or saipan. Ask them if it was a bad idea to bomb a radical nation into submission instead of sacrificing 1,000,000 american men. 1 MILLION men!!!! That's just American lives. The japs showed on countless islands that surrender isn't an option. How many maps die to our 1,000,000. With island hopping kill ratio you have to assume it would have been at least 5,000,000 dead maps.

So 2 bombs that killed 100-150 thousand people was a bad idea?

Instead let's kill 6,000,000 people instead and call it humane?
