've always wondered the same thing. I don't see what Chicago offers that no other place offers. You could say the same for places like Dallas or Houston but at least those places are warm most of the year.
Chicago is just a bunch of buildings and concrete built on some flat land.

Who spends a week vacation in Chicago?
I went there a couple of years for a conference. Went a day early. Hit up Navy Pier, the fountain used in Married With Children, walked the Magnificant Mile shops, had a steak, took a pic with the Harry Carry statue, rode the "El".
Did I miss anything?
I think it's cool how they dye the river there. But I can see videos of that.

They have live moving targets.

I walked into that Pokemon Go deal not knowing about it. I was killing time waiting on the Captain at DuPage Harbor. It was damned funny to watch. I have never in my life imagined seeing thousands of people buried in their phones wondering around for imaginary creatures. Just plain crazy. Pokemon isn’t specific to Chicago, and people who were into were all having fun, so witnessing this was quite entertaining.

Yeah we went from that to see Vampire Weekend at Northerly Island...was interesting

I agree. Chicago sucks compared to Baton Rouge. They don’t have crawfish nor care about amateur sports.

Chicago has the same stuff to do as NYC but you can live there for a third of the cost. It’s the most affordable world class city in the US.

If I’m not going to wrigley then there’s no reason to go

i like chicago, and i think it would be a good place for a young, single professional to live, but NYC has way more stuff to do and see than chicago.

I know this was sarcasm, but you should see the dozens of bars packed with alums from schools across the country on a football Saturday. In one day we hit five different packed school bars. It was awesome. I think we hit bama, south carolina, Iowa, Michigan state, and Wisconsin.

Agreed. Lots of young professionals and plenty for them to do. My son just accepted a CE job in Chicago. He is looking forward to living the urban lifestyle for a bit.

He's looking at Wrigleyville or Lincoln Park. Train into downtown on the Redline. His office will be on LaSalle.

Nice. He'll get a lot more for his money in Lakeview and be just one more stop north of LP. And being walkable to wrigleyville is great.

My wife is from there, well a suburb of Chicago. Lots of stuff to do, great job market, Lake Michigan is really nice when it is warm. The suburb she grew up had one if the best schools in the country. We would live there if the real estate and taxes weren't so high in the town she grew up in. I also hate the cold.

Jesus left Chicago, headed down to New Orleans.

Murder rate?

Chicago's murder rate is lower than New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport.

I'm picking on you, but a lot of people in this thread are missing this:
If you spend a couple days in Chicago, and don't spend at least half a day in the Museum of Science and Industry, you did it wrong.

Do common residents in Chicago leave in droves?
Yes
New census data show the Chicago area lost population for the fourth consecutive year, continuing a statewide trend of decline that could threaten future federal funding, economic prosperity and political representation for those left behind.
Illinois' population shrunk by more than any other state from 2010 to 2019, according to data released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
