Chicago outclasses Seattle in most categories but it's fantastic in the summer (May can be hit or miss).

I've always wondered the same thing. I don't see what Chicago offers that no other place offers. You could say the same for places like Dallas or Houston but at least those places are warm most of the year.

Chicago is just a bunch of buildings and concrete built on some flat land.

Chicago is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country and its tourism numbers continue to grow year after year. Over 50 million visitors last year alone. Amongst many other things, Chicago boasts:

- Some of the world's best architecture:

- A glorious and thriving river corridor which features a beautiful promenade;

- River and lake cruises during warm weather months;

- Beaches during the summer;

- Some of the best restaurants in the world, including Alinea, which has been cited as the nation's best cuisine by several publications;

- One of the world's best art museums;

- One of the country's best playhouses (Steppenwolf);

- At least two of the country's best hotels;

- Widely hailed ballet and opera companies (Joffrey and Lyric);

- A widely renowned sketch comedy troupe (Second City);

- Great ethnic neighborhoods and vast array of ethnic food;

- Infinite pubs and bars;

- Two of the country's best universities (U of C and Northwestern)

- Incredible shopping;

- The lake front path and other amazing parks;

- A free zoo near the lakefront;

- And yes, year round professional sports.

This is a mere fraction of what Chicago offers. There is a reason Conde Naste Traveler has named Chicago the Best Big City Destination in America three years running.

And you can access everything you just listed very easily via public transit or a bike.

Also, Arlington Race Track is really fun in the summer if you like betting on the ponies. You can take the Metra, which drops you off in the parking lot (and you can drink on the train). It's a beautiful facility...wish it could get a signature event bigger than the Arlington Million.
