Apartments, townhouses, many "garden homes", and homes in old neighborhoods don't have garages or space for a shed.

Paring back is hard and you have to keep your stuff somewhere.

You don’t need it now. It would be cheaper to buy brand new furniture later.

Local property owners/developers can't build enough of these right now because out of state investment groups LOVE buying these things up in bunches.

I have a retired MD in my family who rents 5 storage units plus a boat storage space as well.

Boomers cannot get enough. They have so much fricking money, they would rather pay to store their old useless shite than spend the time getting rid of it.

Met a guy at a party a month ago that owns 3 storage businesses. Said they print money

Seems like a good investment. The rates for air conditioned storage has gotten so high.

I know a family that used to own a lot of them in north Alabama/Tennessee and they seem to do very well

I assume most of it is boomers and beyond shite that got passed down. Most millennials aren’t pack rats like the old generations

I thought all the older generations lived in sub 1200 sqft homes?

My greatest gen grandparents raised their 3 boomer kids in a 1200sqft house and continued living there for 65yrs til their deaths 2008.

Loved that home and pass by it anytime I’m back up North

If used right, they can actually save you money in some circumstances. Most people just hold on to junk.

It can take a lifetime to accumulate tools or business materials and machinery, parts, etc. If your circumstances change, such as a move, a divorce, a death in the family, or a loss of employment, etc., it can be a lifesaver to be able to store your things until you get back on your feet.

They're as stupid as fricking payday loans.

If people used them as intended, for short-term storage when you move to a new city or something, then fine.

But I guarantee most are filled with junk people forget about or can't let go of.

My mom was a hoarder and got two pods at some point after Katrina. she paid them for years until she died.

Going through her finances, I saw she was paying $400 a month. Going back years. Thousands of dollars pissed away.

I was so mad. I went and looked at the first one. Nothing of value in it. Not trash, but just stuff that wasn't worth holding on to. Blankets, Christmas decorations, etc.

I didn't bother looking in the second. I knew it was more of the same. Stopped payment on both units immediately and told them to do whatever they wanted to the stuff but i wasn't paying for it anymore.

The pre-eminent philosopher of the 20th century, George Carlin explains this phenomenon.

I have a good friend that owns rental property, commercial property, hotels, gas stations, etc.

The most profitable thing he owns are storage units and he’s solely investing in them now. He bundles them and sells them to private equity.

His comment was, “in America we can’t throw anything away. There’s some belief that junk will have a use someday”.

Sentimental and/or hoarding.

Ours is basically the contents of my wife's childhood home after her mom died (mom was pretty young). It's like a snapshot in time from the late 90s.

My wife has a storage unit in Dallas that we've paid for probably 15 years. We've been in a cold war about it for a decade. It's like 250 bucks a month now.

15x12x250 = $45,000. Ouch
