Self storage - an American phenomenon

Saw a blurb this morning that 25% of millennials are renting self storage, which is outpacing Boomers and Gen X.
There are over 51,000 self storage locations in the US compared to about 14,000 McDonald’s. They’re building new ones around town constantly.
Why are people keeping stuff that will end up tossed or donated one day anyway? Some people are paying $300/month to store old furniture, cars, etc.

my wife ABHORS storage sheds. its a tricky situation because i'm a hoarder
and will obsess for years about that one doodad she threw out that i needed 10 years later
but i know she's right. less is more and if your shite is boxed up and you're not displaying or using it then what's the point?

The war for storage will be waged on all fronts.
Pray for the youth of this nation.

for some purposes, its money well spent. for others, its money wasted.

Probably has to do with dumbass student loan indebted millennials living in small apartments compared to larger living spaces of older generations.

I thought all the older generations lived in sub 1200 sqft homes?
That’s what they claim in all the millennial housing threads.

My bat-shite crazy ex-wife's equally crazy son has lived in one for years in California.

I can see keeping a car in one of you don't have a garage at home or just have a carport. And it's worth keeping out the weather. Or the HOA won't let you have car visible on your property.

Where else are they going to store all their Funko Pops?

A lot of it may be those of us living in apartments in big cities. My wife and I got one when we moved in together and combined things. Once we move out of the city and buy a home, we won’t have a need anymore.

Self storage is an incredibly lucrative franchise...many can be managed off site...crazy money!

My wife has a storage unit in Dallas that we've paid for probably 15 years. We've been in a cold war about it for a decade. It's like 250 bucks a month now.
Before we were married I went, unloaded and readied for an LTL carrier, like 10 hours of work. Carrier didn't show, I loaded it all back in, haven't been to the place since.

Not if tastefully done, like a brick facade on the front facing exterior and gas lamp fixtures flanking the key pad protected sliding glass doors.
