This is going to be awesome to watch unfold.

No it’s not.

The dumbasses that supported this will all flee the consequences of their terrible decisions and bring these same voting trends to the suburbs.

Meanwhile, the poor people who can’t move will be trapped living in apocalyptic conditions in one of the most affluent cities in the most affluent country in the world.

This is not awesome.

People have been settling in the suburbs for decades, that's not going to stop. In fact it will most likely increase. Most sane people left the city and commute.

It also has to do with the fact most of the higher ups in the gangs/cartels send their children to El Paso for schooling and go shopping there on the weekends. El Paso is "off limits" when it comes to the major violence for that reason.

I lived on the west side for a couple years and every weekend the big name stores were packed with nice cars with Chihuahua license plates.

Yep. When I lived there the majority of crime in El Paso was car theft (it was no trouble for thieves to get the stolen vehicle over the border before anyone knew it was gone). That was 30 yrs ago, though, so I don't know if that's true anymore.

Just have to go visit there every 3 months (pre-Covid) to see a customer. Won’t be staying downtown anytime soon, that’s for sure.

We don’t know if these new ideas will work, but I think most can see that what we have isn’t really working great. Something has to change and if proposals are made that the population likes and votes for, I will wholeheartedly hope that it works.

I’m all for change and I’m all for holding bad police accountable.

I think most of this country is. Most of this country also looked at the murder of George Floyd and immediately thought Chauvin was not only malicious but needed to be fired and put in jail. Same for Breanna Taylor, no knocks have to go. Hopefully her sacrifice creates change.

But it is intellectual dishonesty to say that any form of abolishing, defunding, and pulling funding from Police Departments will help make change, because in all likelihood it will only cause increase in violence in those areas. We have the data to prove that. We also know that it is actually partnerships or cities/communities and police departments working together that has proven to decrease violent crime in bad areas.

I get your contrarian viewpoint and need to call out over reactions. But, please don’t lean in or argue that any sort of decrease in police department funding will make the change you are advocating for. You know that.

Seattle City Council just moved this morning to abolish the entire Seattle Police Department and replace it with a "civilian led Department of Community Safety & Violence Prevention."

This is some progressive-marxist utopian bullshite.

In what way?

Progressivism seeks to destroy regardless of effectiveness.

The answer to reform is to end the war on drugs, but that ain't enough for commies.

Holy hell. The feds should tell any city that does something like this that they will not receive another dime of federal money since they do not care about ensuring the basic safety of it's citizens.

It really is, but that city has been full of loons for a long time and it's getting worse.

I have a distant cousin that lives in Seattle and I've been to visit him several times. He and his wife were never particularly on the crazy liberal side, but I've learn that they enrolled their daughter in some private school that sounds like it's basically a feminazi training school.

It pisses me off to hear her talk and realize the shite that is being fed to her at such a young age. She's 13 and only wants to talk non-stop about environmental causes and SJW issues.
Her whole class cried when Trump won the election.

There are lot's of people like that up there, but it is indeed a clean arse place with lots of $$$ so we shall see where this all goes.

I’ve both called out overreactions as well as articulated a well reasoned (imo) point of view. You’re better than a lazy contrarian jab.

You and I have talked a lot about this and see eye to eye on most.

I don’t and won’t agree with a blanket “defund police” just for the sake of defunding the police. But if you can show that you can “defund” the police by outsourcing non violent/non emergency situations, 911 dispatch call centers, homeless outreach, etc to community based groups and let police be police, I can get behind that.

Just for example, if a police force has a budget of $100mil, but the aforementioned line items to be outsourced accounted for $20mil, you’re still “defunding” the police by giving the revamped department an $80mil budget, but you aren’t really slashing their budget like it sounds.

When a city tells their police department “we’re slashing your budget in half but you still have all the same responsibilities, deal with it” I will be right next to you ripping them to shreds.
