Guess these people pushing for no A/C have never lived in an SEC state in August

The whitest paint in the world has been created in a lab at Purdue University, a paint so white that it could eventually reduce or even eliminate the need for air conditioning, scientists say.

The paint has now made it into the Guinness World Records book as the whitest ever made.

So why did the scientists create such a paint? It turns out that breaking a world record wasn't the goal of the researchers: Curbing global warming was.

“When we started this project about seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind,” said Xiulin Ruan, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue, in a statement.

The idea was to make a paint that would reflect sunlight away from a building, researchers said.

Making this paint really reflective, however, also made it really white, according to Purdue University. The paint reflects 98.1% of solar radiation while also emitting infrared heat. Because the paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it emits, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without consuming power.

Using this new paint to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet could result in a cooling power of 10 kilowatts. “That’s more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,” Ruan said.

Typical commercial white paint gets warmer rather than cooler. Paints on the market that are designed to reject heat reflect only 80% to 90% of sunlight and can’t make surfaces cooler than their surroundings.

They do already make radiant paints. I know of one you can buy for about $300 for 5 gallons that is called Lo/Mit-II and use it on the backside of your rafters and decking in your attic. It is a radiant barrier paint but it is less effective than the roll foil radiant barrier. When the paint is installed correctly, it will reflect about 75% of the radiant heat vs actual radiant barrier blocking 97% of radiant heat but neither of those claims to actively make an area cooler than surrounding temperatures like the paint in the article does.

bullshite. They apparently never lived in the south. So say it does “cool” your house off. It ain’t gonna do shite to get rid of the 90% humidity levels in your house.

My house is entirely covered by oak trees, to the point it can't be seen on google maps... still needs ac, despite having 10+ inches of r-30 in the ceiling.

Yep. It's crazy to me that people don't understand how an A/C works. Dumping cold air into a house is a small part of what an A/C does. Sucking out the humidity is just as important to keep a house cool.

This is fanciful, but I’m all for ideas to mitigate the warming climate that don’t include trashing the economy.

Clouds do what they are attempting to do with paint.

Well, you better go talk to mother nature. How much climate change do you think is man-made vs natural?

It’s like, how much more white could this be and the answer is none. None more white.

Any home below the Mason Dixon line will have no use for such paint

I guess Bill Gates isn't blocking out the sun anymore huh?

Side note: does said white paint control humidity?

It can reduce the need for air conditioning but not eliminate it.

Having that paint means that you aren’t picking up radiated energy because you are reflecting it but doesn’t do much about conduction or convection.

If you are on a cement slab which is heating up, you still get heat.

If the air is 100 degrees outside, you still get heat simply through air currents.

It will never sell. It will get cancelled first.

Well, they already have made the world's blackest paint that absorbs like 99% of light so I guess these paints can now engage in a culture war.

Worlds blackest paint
