Back in the day, we just got in the halls, sat down and put our book sacks over our heads.
My parents hid under their desk in case of a nuclear fricking bomb.

I don't buy the liability argument. These decisions are made by public servants and they are largely shielded by qualified immunity. I think it's simpler: they see the opportunity for a day off and they take it.

Agreed. If schools could be sued for keeping kids in attendance, why couldn’t they be sued for any injuries caused from early dismissal?

Moreover, can someone provide examples of a lawsuit that was filed from not dismissing? edit… I did find evidence of this happening. Couldn’t find if any money was paid.

Part of the globalist agenda to make us believe the weather today is much worse than a few decades ago.

Feel like kids would sometimes be safer in a school then sitting at home by themselves. Many school have pretty solid structures kids can go to. Yes I know some may not.

It's not so much them closing the school for weather as much as it is when they close.

Kills me when Ouachita Parish will know bad weather is coming, let the kids get to school and then decide to close schools at 10am right before the storm hits.

So, you have parents scrambling to have kids picked up and everyone is on the road during the bad weather.

Ms Gee works at the kids' school so it's not an issue for us. I could see where finding daycare would be a pain for some. Personally I like when they get out for a random day when I'm not offshore. They come home early and we cook, hang out, watch a movie or something like that.

Of course, we put the kids in an independent(think non-catholic) school a few years ago. Most people can't comprehend how easy it is to educate your kids when you remove the government from the equation.

Well, back in the day, there wasn't as much notice for a potential storm with tornados. With that, getting the message out to parents that the school is closing definitely wasn't easy to do. Now everyone can receive a mass text, email, recorded call, to the palm of their hand.
Whether canceling school early back in the day wasn't done because everyone was tougher/everyone wasn't lawsuit happy/etc may be partially true, but it especially wasn't done at the time because it wasn't an option.

Most of the time, the administrators are at the schools after the students leave. I know that’s happened a few times where I’m at

Try again

I guess this question depends where you are, but for a large portion of LA & MS, isn't the worst of the weather supposed to hit while the kids are on the busses on the way home, and not when they would be safe in the schools?

I would much rather have my kids get off of school a few hours early than have to hear about a bus full of kids getting blown off the road due to large gusts

Anytime you see a schedule change to "virtual school" and admin works half a day this is 1000% what they are doing. Admin doesn't actually show up... at least in my experience.

1988, Chicago, I was in the 3rd grade. One day in February there was three feet of snow on the ground. Kids who were bussed in didn't show up but those of us who walked to school did. They only let us go home early because the lunch ladies couldn't make it.

Fast forward today and school closes if there may be a freeze outside.
