I watched 9/11 and the "shock and awe" bombing of Baghdad from a classroom in high school.

They had a pretty big impact for me at the time. Covid isn't too 5 for me. My life has changed very little over this bug.

Katrina for sure. I was in 6th grade during that time. My school had a large influx of students from N.O. after Katrina.

Katrina was a much bigger deal to me personally than this.

Some other legitimate answers I think-

Boxing Day Tsunami
Japanese earthquake/tsunami/Fukushima
Paris attacks

I agree Columbine was much different than any other shooting as far as national impact - probably even moreso than Sandy Hook.

BTW this is another good time to mention how bizarre it is that the country has memory holed the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. The only other thing I can compare it to is the Queens plane crash that happened in November 2001 (overshadowed by 9/11, obviously).

Even though I wasn’t even of age to be working (or in college) I’m gonna day 08
Because now I’m in the industry and all I know is a Dodd Frank Wall Street
Where the pay isn’t as good as it once was

But 9/11 is one for me as I would assume for most

I’m 42, and besides personal events, I would probably put The Challenger explosión, Katrina, Oklahoma City bombíng, 2000 election, beginning of the Gulf War, and the OJ chase and verdict announcement higher than this strictly because of the visceral intensity and immediacy of those.

This Covid thing has obviously affected us more than those things (except Katrina for a lot of folks on here), but it’s just lingered too long—there’s no moment to really point to, no “I remember where I was when.” To me, the biggest “moment” was finding out the OKC/Utah game had been abruptly cancelled, and I read it here while dropping a deuce. Not anything visual to really point to. It’s just weird and still so surreal, almost like an elongated, boring-arse dream.

9/11
2008 collapse
Challenger
OKC
Waco

Locally, Katrina, 2016 flood, Gustav

I don't know where the Rona will rank. Probably pretty high if you lost your job or business.

Covid feels phony-esque. All the others felt like history ( minus 2008 election which was a foregone conclusion). This just feels like a vacation from history.

Sorry, I was just conceding that as #1. Thought it was understood.

Born in ‘80’s, so I don’t actually remember it...but Chernobyl has got to be up there.

A NATO Warsaw-Pact nuke exchange is a possible extinction event for Humanity. The dissolution of the Warsaw Pact was orders of magnitude bigger all those other events combined.
