You haven’t shopped at Lee Michael’s have you? They still provide the very experience you deem obsolete
I actually went to Lee Michael’s yesterday to drop off a watch to be serviced.
LM is a boutique not a department store like Saks. Personal shoppers at boutiques are more common than a large department store.

The demise of retail in New Orleans started when Little Rock-based Dillard’s acquired D.H. Holmes
The demise of retail is primarily due to the internet, not any local factors.

It's no just NO. It's brick and mortar everywhere. The success of Lakeside Mall defies logic.

It’s a shame to see. New Orleans once featured numerous local high end stores. Luxury department stores are struggling, with fewer chains left, and Saks is on the ropes.
New Orleans no longer has the appeal to wealthy tourists like it once had.

Has nothing to do with that, Saks filed for bankruptcy in January. They have a lot of debt they can't pay off and are closing 9 stores.
They kept 33 stores open. Guess who missed the cut as always? NOLA because it’s a bottom feeder city now dependent on gimmicky Mardi Gras parking violations to generate revenue to avoid bankruptcy itself. Move the teams.

New Orleans was only a destination retail spot because of tourism. It never had the size or wealth to economically support these places without it. Now that everything is online, people don't have to wait 4 or 5 months to buy something at a certain location, they can just press a button.

Just looked at their website, did not find a single item I would wear or spend $100 on, much less for the prices they had listed

Typical NOLA. Believe they have people to pay for upscale shopping, when in reality, Suda Salvage is more like it.

That particular store on the men’s side went from really nice, high-end brands (Canali, Zegna, Hugo Boss, Armani) to strictly ethnic and queer shite or a combination of the two.

Almost every Saks across the country followed this fashion trend except for the signature Saks in New York. Most of the Saks store smell like week due to it new clientele.

Yep. Went with my wife several years ago and needed some business wear. Went again recently and said I wouldn't be caught dead in any of that crap.
Its a sign of the times in todays e-commerce world that these huge brick and mortar places just can't survive.
But this is bad for NOLA imo. Thats already a shady area and will likely to get worse.

Can’t imagine walking down Canal St with a large Saks Fifth shopping bag in tow. Goodbye bag.

Not surprising. NOLA is not headed in a good direction.
Sak’s filing Chapter 11 has very little to do with New Orleans and everything to do with a dying business model that only allows them succeed in doing business in huge markets. Products are also hideous and often not aligned with the tastes and preferences of the folks in the region who can afford to shop there.
