Just before 3:30 p.m. Fordice was flying his P-51 Mustang, a propeller-driven World War II fighter plane, when the plane crashed. NTSB is investigating the cause and no formal information was given as of Tuesday evening.
Hell of a way to go out

I saw this earlier. Won’t get much press anywhere but Mississippi.

Looks like he had 5,000 hours behind him, and the weather was pretty good. Wonder if this was a mechanical failure on an old bird.

He owned the mat yard, right? I think he kept a lot of equipment by the old cannery as well.

I cannot understand why people continue to fly small planes.
You couldn’t pay me 10 million dollars to take a flight in any small plane.

All died in small plane crashes, just to name a few.

Could have been me if I flew raggedy old planes.

I had to have many a conversation with his Dad over the years. Once he warmed up to you, he was a fairly nice guy, but before he warmed up to you, he could be an absolute entitled arse.

Wow. I can't imagine flying one now. That plane had to be what? 80 years old?

I worked for him around 2011-2013. He'd fly a seaplane from MS out to our jobs in south LA and land in the borrow pit (water). We were building levees.

First of all , Skynryd was on a passenger plane , a Convair 240 that would hold thirty people . It was the equivalent of a DC3 . The problem was , it wasn’t well maintained .
Almost all of those other crashes were “ visual flight rules pilot flew into instrument conditions “ or pilot warned not to fly because of bad weather and they flew anyway .
That’s jfk jr , patsy cline , Otis Redding , even Glen Miller ( even though this was in wartime ) .
In almost all these cases , either the passengers or the pilot had a bad case of “getthereitis” which is deadly .
That plane skynyrd was on was shooting flames out of one of the engines on the flight prior and Van zant coaxed everyone on and said they would get the plane serviced in Baton Rouge

His company had the contract to cast the articulated mats at the mat field. The site itself is owned by the Corps of Engineers. He's had the contract all but one time if I recall correctly.
Frequent Mississippi River flooding was causing him to have to relocate all of the equipment a couple miles away each year. He bought or leased some of the nearby old cannery that was on higher ground and built a private road for the equipment to move on for such events.
He was never anything but polite to me the few occasions I was around him. Prayers for his family and friends.

He was a good friend. More importantly he gave his time and treasure to our wounded vets through his foundation, not to leave out his own service to our country. Also, he had a tremendous respect for our WWII vets.
If you have been to the WWII museum and sat in one of the video areas to listen and watch interviews, most likely it was an interview that Dan traveled to film them and on his own dime. I could call him on any given day and ask him how many WWII vets were still with us and he would give me the exact number. He will be missed.
