He wasn’t flying a small plane He was flying one of the most powerful retired military fighter aircraft ever built. He was doing an acrobatic maneuver and was at too low an altitude to complete the maneuver.

Objectively false

It's mostly always the landing that gets you when you fly.

The problem was it ran out of fuel
From the story I got it was because the pilot dumped all the fuel.

Sure but its difficult to keep short.
TLDR : Nothing sounds like a Merlin powered mustang.
During WW2 (mostly european theatre) we were losing our bomber aircraft at an atrocious rate due to the fact that our current fighter escorts at the time didnt have the range to keep up all the way to the target. They would escort the bombers part way then be forced to turn back home due to low fuel. The german fighter squadrons figured this out and would wait to attack after the bombers were on their own.
One day some brit test pilot who worked for rolls royce had the genius idea to take an already existing p-51 airframe and mate it to an existing 1450hp rolls royce merlin engine. This turned the plane into a monster at high altitude thanks to a 2 stage supercharger. Better yet it gave the plane enough range with external drop tanks to provide cover for the bombers all the way to the target and back. Its often quoted as being “the plane that won the war”. Not possible without the merlin under the hood that was being built under license here in the states by Packard.
And if you are ever lucky enough to hear a p-51 in person there is nothing else that sounds like it. Cant mistake it and its music to my ears.

A perfect synopsis of the P-51 + Rolls Royce engine.
Also, the Brits didn’t have the capacity to manufacture the engine on a wider scale due to existing wartime obligations and obstacles, so Rolls Royce licensed the Packard Motor Company to manufacture the Merlin engine, including the ones used to upgrade P-51 Mustangs. So, technically it was a Packard Merlin used in the Mustangs.
