Only thing I can think of is that the reactors were too bulky to ship by rail to Vladivostok.
Then they had two choices, go through one of the most crowded and monitored routes through the Persian Gulf or take a route that would make them go by Spain one way or another.

I am a little confused about the logistics of this situation.
Russia and NK share a land border. Not sure why this would need to be a on ship to begin with.
If size made these items only transportable by ship, what was it doing off the coast of Spain ?

Spain reported seismic activity a day or two AFTER the ship sank. It sounds to me like NATO picked up on illegal nuclear reactor tech on its way to North Korea from the Russians, so they sank it. Russia found out that NATO found out, so they deployed assets to destroy the evidence that sank.
North Korea completed the hull for their first nuclear powered submarine, so this was probably what they were promised from Russia in exchange for their help in Ukraine.

Probably had no reactors on it. Russia probably performed a misdirection.
Every story I read is pretty vague on details regarding the confirmation of reactors on board.
