Russia is not “poor” relative to the countries in question that are directly affected. Russia has a very little national debt and a likely lender if needed in China to be a thorn in the west’s side. Russia also has significant natural resources and energy to use for significant leverage over the countries involved. Putin sees the weakness and ineptitude of the west in current state. Europe ain’t gonna do shite about Ukraine but talk and some sanctions. Biden ain’t gonna do anything meaningful either when the question is just Ukraine. Putin knows their “red line” is meaningless because it was very meaningless in Syria, which they were also involved in.
