The report is in and B.R is about to solve most of its problems

quote:

New research presented to an East Baton Rouge panel studying the area's street names Monday suggests that many of the planning and street-naming decisions in some neighborhoods were done with explicitly and implicitly held values connected to racism and segregation.

quote:

Researchers also found that having streets and neighborhoods with names tied to the Confederacy — like in Southdowns, Shenandoah and the Hermitage area off Gardere — can limit the economic incentives, negatively impact Baton Rouge's regional and national reputation and weaken the city-parish's ability to retain the next generation of young talent.

quote:

"I think the administration needs to now be cognizant for the need of some type of office or committee that's paid to look at these things and keep these discussions going," Councilwoman Erika Green said Monday during a meeting of an advisory committee the Metro Council created this summer to evaluate street names and determine whether any should be renamed.

Looks like B.R is about to pay a person to run the Office of Renaming Racist Street Names

Is Shenandoah not a private neighborhood? How exactly would that work?

About time they realized this! It’s definitely the reason I moved away.

Here’s a question:
Do you think people REALLY believe this, or are they just saying dumb shite like this to get paid, a la Joel Olsteen? Two different groups of people, spreading bullshite and propaganda.

Take down all the statues, and all images of any past President (except Obama). I've heard that helps tremendously.

50% plus 1 of the residents living on that street would have to sign a petition to change the name. If the folks living there wanna change their address on everything tied to that street name - mail, Financials, Amazon, and so on - more power to em.

I have a sneaky feeling it ain't changing

The streets are publicly owned. HOA isn't paying for that maintenance.

Is this some unique Louisiana law?

It's likely a confusion of correlation and causation.

I have no doubt that having lots of confederate recognition in public spaces is statistically related to poorer economic development. Whether it's because of the names, as opposed to other associated factors, is a different question.

I grew up on and my parents still live on a street with a Union name. I always use the Confederate version of the name in causal conversation.

Yeah, Southdowns is really in economic peril and the areas around Gardere are shitholes because the names of the streets keep Orvis and Chanel away.

Battles and stuff in the Civil War were named different things by the Union and the Confederacy. Like Bull Run/Manassas. Our street has a Union name but I use the Confederate version as a joke.

How old is your street? Like 99% of paved roads have been built since 1970.
