re: Regret not joining the military

If you have a stable career I would say don't regret the choice. I enjoyed MOST of my time in and did and saw a lot of things most people never get to but most people don't get shot at either. I joined a peacetime Army and within a little over a year I had been on two combat deployments on two different continents. Military service can really be like a box of chocolates.

my regret was not passing the PT portion of Basic for the Navy. I learned a lot about myself and Basic really set me in good ways I still follow. made me a lot more confident in myself to be sure.

to think I was the sit-ups portion of the PT exam away from going to school and my station in Long Beach CA.

I do have regret not doing a year or two before my professional career. It just so happens that my career lined up nicely so looking back it didn't make a ton of sense for me to have joined, besides me wanting to serve my country. I graduated HS in 1999 so things are a bit different now.

I tried to, graduated college in 79, applied for OCS, eyes and knees not good enough.

nope, i had passed the test and was all set up to sign but there were too many red flags so i declined

it was the best decision i ever made and i avoided making a huge mistake

its great for some, especially the unskilled and less intelligent, so it wasnt a good fit for me.

Yah, really mad I didn't join up to have my limbs blown off by an IED in a war that was pointless.

I was really close to signing up to be a reserve marine (or however they say it). The thought was I could do my 5 years and get help with college after missing first semester. Being in reserves, would be less likely I would have to go overseas; at least that's how it was sold to me.

Decided against it because recruiter told me that being in reserves, I could not guarantee my career path and I knew early on accounting was my calling card. He told me I had very little shot there as that business is one of the more highly sought after areas. We both agreed it wouldn't work out.

Based on when I joined, my 5th year would not have ended until sometime in 2002 (don't know they define the 5 years). And from the stories I heard from HS friends that did join, that means I would have been required to extend my military time as I would have been overseas by the end of 2001.

And, like I said earlier because I knew the career path I wanted to take back in HS, in just wasn't for me.

Nope. They are pawns in a bigger game. I hate to say it but it’s the truth. I won’t allow my kids to join.

Nope, not a single minute.
