It depends on when the up/down vote system was implemented as it relates to 2016. I was likely WAY ahead in upvotes before 2016 and the demographic/mentality shifts that occurred thereafter.

Yes but I had no idealism that a libertarian-leaning major candidate had a chance, even though until 2014-2015 it had been the professed philosophy du jour of the poli board for a few years.

Back when I had vastly more faith in the Republican party than I do now, I did sincerely think that Ron had a shot at the nomination in 2012. After Republicans picked Romney, I thought that was just proof that the old guard wanted stability. Then Republicans coalesced around Trump, which was when I realized that a significant number of Republicans do secretly want someone to tell them what to do, in spite of their protestations to the contrary. That's what I get for forgetting about the political wisdom of H. L. Mencken, I suppose

On "old school" message boards like this one, the top threads are the most recently active ones, and the comments are chronological. Which makes sense. On Reddit, every top post in every sub has the exact same viewpoint and every top comment shares that same viewpoint.

On Reddit you can sort by: best/hot/new/top/rising. You can set it up how you like.

The original idea was to eliminate spam and trolling.

But it quickly just built and reinforced echo chambers.

It has nothing to do with quality anymore, only agreement.

People use them to carry out personal beefs and will downvote every post that a person makes if that person made them mad once. I will give those people credit though, they are dedicated to something nobody cares about but them. v

And it shows. It’s filled with regurgitated low quality shite that people know will get easy praise/upvotes. That and bots and other engagement farming content.

Used to be one of the most unique and original places on the internet with the content created on there. But that was about 10+ years ago when it was last like that

even here and other places like it, you don't get banned or harassed for simply disagreeing with the echo chamber

Texags would disagree. I joined because I live in Houston, and most of the people in my neighborhood were on, talking about who they like for pressure washing in the area, etc.

I got banned 2? posts in for saying that they probably shouldn't have extended Sumlin after Manziel won the Heisman, that they should see how he coached post-Manziel. But aggy going to aggy. (ETA: I posted the opinion a few days after they extended his contract.)

It is, literally and easily, the worst and most destructive public forum in human history. It’s as if the dumb kids and the evil kids and the rejects made a pact to see how ridiculous they could be, and those arrows ensure it.

I still have no idea why this place has upvotes and downvotes other than to just keeping more engaged for a millisecond longer it takes to vote on a post

They do it so you use their app/forums more. That’s the whole point of the algorithms. The more you use it, the more money it makes. Same as FB, Instagram, X, etc.

Reddit is awesome. Where else can you find DIY plumbing repairs, gun info, and porn in one spot?

The CBS Sportsline message boards back in the day had a great system, posters got ratings and it impacted which thread got exposure. You didn’t have posters like Jamal Murry spamming the boards that way.

I love the upvotes and downvotes. At least now when you nail a post with a witty line, you can see it was appreciated without any direct responses.
