If the protests were behind the large surges, it would stand to reason that states in the northeast would just be skyrocketing right now since they usually had much larger protests and over a lot more days.

They really haven't had large increases even though most were also undergoing their main re-openings at the same time with the notable exception of bars and larger gatherings.

The places you are talking about have had their spikes, which happened before the protests. A place like NYC with 30% or so already having been infected is not going to be impacted by the protests as much. A lot of things are at work, but people who think the protest weren't a major factor in the spike are in complete denial.

Yes, thoughtful people understand this though it will never be shared by the liberal progressive media which continues to push gloom and doom leading up to the election.
Deaths due to Covid-19 have dropped steadily since mid-April. Here's a graph you will never see on the news. It actually took some digging to find a graph of weekly deaths over time. It wasn't broken down like this at the CDC website nor was an option for the Johns Hopkins website data. And yes, I recognize that there was an uptick on June 26:

Is that the day that New Jersey decided to add ~1600 deaths that were "probable"?

Doesnt it need around 5 minutes outside to kill it off?

Studies vary, slightly... but 5 minutes vs not at all is a striking difference. Especially if you're doing any level social distancing on top of it.

Didn't NJ just dump over 1,000 deaths that they "reclassified" as Covid even though they were never confirmed by testing? Is that the cause of the uptick?

Yes, I think so. I'm not going to give MSN a hit but this is the headline:
New Jersey adds nearly 1,900 suspected COVID-19 deaths TRENTON, N.J. (AP)

Here's a link for the NY Post: LINK

yes. (Don't forget the huge gathering to bury G. Floyd)

and you are a racist for pointing this out.

unlikely to be the norm.
if you live with someone who is vulnerable, and you care, then you dont go to bars.

Surely there must be a large number of employees at these bars that have tested positive now right?

I know a couple different bar owners and I don't believe any of their employees are positive. Obviously that may not be true for other bars.

I see people saying the protests aren't as much of a culprit because they are outside, but didn't NOLA get hammered by C19 because of Mardi Gras? Isn't that held outside? Or are we to assume the spread at MG was due to indoor related activities associated with MG (hotels, balls, parties)?

The masks are magical.

There are two choices, the masks prevent all spread of the virus, or the protests are responsible for some spread.

One of those two statements has to be true.

I mean you are wrong.

Literally every single variable tilts the scales toward bars spreading viruses more easily than outdoor protests. More total people are going to bars vs protesting. They are in closer proximity in bars vs outdoors. The air is contained in bars vs dispersing outdoors. Bars are filled with touchable surfaces vs very few outdoors. No sunlight indoors.

It's like you aren't even trying to understand. I mean you tried to compare protesters touching a statue to patrons touching a bar. There are maybe dozens of statues that have been torn down by protesters, surely no more than hundreds of them touched by many people. And you think that levels the playing field vs tens of thousands of bartops?

Again, this is not to say that the protests are not or have not contributed to a spike in cases. It should just be obvious that bars, in particular, being open creates many, many more cases than outdoor events.
quote:

ETA: There is a reason the NY Governor doesn’t want protestors to participate in contact tracing. They are afraid of the results.
Complete misrepresentation of the truth, otherwise known as a lie. Protesters absolutely can and will "participate" in the tracing, they just won't be asked specificially if they were involved in a protest. They can volunteer that information, and it will be recorded and used if they do. Further, such information is nothing to be "afraid of" if the aim is to hide the impact of the protests. The impact on case numbers will be evident regardless. You just aren't thinking this through. You are emotional.
quote:

ETA 2: Many places weren’t even fully opened yet when protests started, so your theory about there being more people in bars, is entirely wrong

Just as an anecdotal example, my town had one protest march of about 100 people. One day, for a couple hours. 100 people, and most of them were wearing masks. Outdoors.

For comparison, one bar in my town can get more action than that in just one night, and we have several bars and they've been open for many days. The possible transmission events are not even in the same universe. The majority of the country is more like my town than like the major protest cities.

Again, you have some emotional attachment here that is clouding your judgment. You seem to be focused only on the number of people participating in the largest of protest events, without regard to any of the factors that actually impact infection rates.

Lmao. Shut the frick up. You cannot possibly believe that 100 people going to a bar is worse than 1000 people congregated in the streets

Honestly, I think it's basically impossible to catch COVID outdoors.

Right, I’m the one not trying to understand?

Surfaces can be wiped every few minutes. It’s like you are assuming “bars” means reggies on a Saturday night after an LSU game

Again, your argument is based on theories that sound good to you

It's like you're assuming "nationwide protests" means every town big and small has thousands of people hugging one another in the streets. It just ain't happening.

And yours?

Mine sounds a hell of a lot better than yours. You don't seem to be grasping just how much bigger "outside" is than the inside of a bar, and how that impacts the concentration of virus particles and how much people are exposed to them.

What a depressing thread, I couldn’t even finish the second page. We are arguing about fricking masks and missed the most important piece of the entire article: “ The ratio of estimated infections to known cases in these studies, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Friday, range from 6 to 1 in Connecticut as of early May to 24 to 1 in Missouri as of late April.“

So the media agenda is cases are “spiking” despite a direct correlation between number of tests and number of cases. On top of that, the CDC just said that the number of actual INFECTIONS COULD BE AS HIGH AS 6x-24x OF POSITIVE tests.

Media/Karen: “We have 2 million positive cases and we are SPIKING, shut it down”

Voice of reason: “Cases aren’t spiking, tests are increasing and as a result so are cases. This is expected as we reopen; the stated goal was to be <10% positive cases, which we are. Oh and by the way, we could actually have 40-50m cases based on antibody testing...putting the fatality rate in line with the flu”.

But what are we talking about? Wearing masks inside vs outside and shutting down bars. We are doomed.
