I am guessing you made up your mind on your own right? I would let your child do the same.

it boggles my mind. Almost all of the atheists I know thought a lot about god, and think way more about ethics than the christians I know. Its not that the christians I know are unethical, most of them are awesome people. Its that they don't actively think what is right/wrong, where as atheists don't have a handy decode chart and thus continually reflect on the nature of being.
Also, atheists represent less than .1% of prison.

Great question My mother in law is a church going type and my kids are 100% cynical on everything. My son told her God is a big fat woman named Bertha. Grandma was not happy.

Yeah but can she prove your son is wrong?

I agree with all of that. As someone who is also non-religious/doesn't believe, I find the obnoxious atheist just as annoying as the obnoxious christian.

virtually the only unelectable claim one can make in politics is that they don't believe in God.
No kidding. Despite this, some folks claim there is a war on their values. Ironic.
Salmon, hopefully your parents love and respect you enough to respect your personal decision on religion. They raised you to think for yourself, and so you have. Raise your daughter likewise. I've had good results with my 3 daughters following the same tack.
Now that my atheist parents are much closer to their mortality, they went back to the Catholic/Presby church. Not proselytizers, but do it for themselves. If it makes them happy, great.

Just my opinion...
If you are determined to raise your child non-religiously, are you also telling them that everything else in childhood is also fake... (Santa Clause, fairies... the entire Disney channel...) all the wonderment and enchantments that makes imagination and dreams for little kids.
That would make a child's life quite dull...
So if you allow your child to believe in fairies and fairy tales, princesses, magic, and super heroes... why not treat religion the same way?
Once they get old enough, let it be their choice to believe or not...

For me, it is the influence of agnostic/atheist relatives that try to undermine the faith journey I want to share with my children.
I just try to avoid arguments and not to be defensive about it.
Not everyone in my life shares my spiritual beliefs or football preferences, but I treat them like I want to be treated.

actually you are probably an atheist. an atheist is someone who does not actively believe in god.
Almost everyone is agnostic, meaning when pressed they will say - well anything is possible.
Actually you have no fricking clue who I am or what I believe in.
So there's that. You think you know more about someone that you don't know than they know about themselves?

Seems to me a whole lot of assuming what others are assuming, is going on here, and we're left with nothing but a big circular clusterfrick.

I was angry when I wrote it.
The dude straight up told me I didn't know what I believed in and that I was actually an atheist that didn't believe in god.
WTF

That's usually the way these threads go.
OP did his best to keep it on track without it denigrating into the usual debate.

Yeah, he was fine here. My point was not directed to him at all.

Well, I do 't think you should make a strong effort to convince your child either way about religion...basically, give them unbiased information to make their own decision when the time comes....
That way, the child can be appreciative and informed when around the relatives without feeling the pressure of being torn between parents and others.

Agree, sorry.
This is about parenting. He should let his kids decide on their own and shouldn't restrict them from learning about any religion they find interesting. He can answer questions vaguely like "Well what do you think?" and say "Everyone believes in different things and we all need to choose our own belief system"
But thats in a perfect world and I don't have kids (phew!) so I am no expert.
