Sorry for your loss. So hard to lose a loved one this way.
You're spot on: Put the fricking nicotine down. I did 29 years ago when my first child was born. Never looked back. I'm alive today for it.

Have you tried nicotine pouches? I alternated between smoking and dipping for over 20 years before trying pouches a few years ago and haven’t touched tobacco since. Completely satisfies my nicotine cravings.

I haven’t tried but was thinking about trying those Zen things. Not sure if I spelled it correctly. I’ve tried nicotine gum but it made me feel bad.

Eta: Haven’t had a cigarette in 15 years but I prefer smoking to dipping all day long. Never missed dip when I was smoking but still think about cigarettes while I dip. Cigarettes with coffee were divine

Eta2: Saying that, will never smoke one again

Yes you will have some withdrawal but you wont die. Take it an hour at a time.

Sounds like he made it into his 70s.

That's a damn good run.
I mean, at age 70, I am fully aware that genetics and poor past decisions will eventually jump out and go, "SURPRISE!" but I'm going kicking and screaming. I don't know many 70 year olds in the shape I'm in right now, and wondor sometimes if all the working out and running and monitoring what I eat is just a hobby and my end is meant to be on death's own terms, anyway, no matter what I do. .

It’s worth a try for sure. There are several common brands at most convenience stores. Zyn is most expensive but one of my least favorites. My go to is Velo wintergreen 6mg. $3-$5 per can depending on store/promo sales. I tried several brands, flavors & strength before knowing what i liked best.
I did the gum for awhile too. Didn’t love it, and it was messy.

I’m gonna start up again when I hit 85 (if I live that long).

Love a cigarette with coffee or a cocktail.

Mother in law smoked two packs a day but got bad blood tainted with Hep C in early 80s She died at 72 and had the lung capacity of a 18 year old competitive swimmer.

I remember 6 years ago when smokers were going to die first from Covid. None of the smokers I know got more than a mild case

I smoked from 17-42, 25 years. Quit 16 years ago cold turkey. I gained a ton of weight, but that’s better than smoking. I’ve also saved probably $80,000 or more on cigarettes in the last 16 years.

My best friend since second grade died a couple months ago from lung cancer at age 58. He didn’t quit cigarettes until a few years ago, but vaped like a madman until about a year or two before he was diagnosed.

I’m crossing my fingers I quit in time.

Quit smoking after 50 years. Found stage 3 lung cancer a year after I quit. No symptoms, just a low-dose CT scan recommended for former smokers. That shite is gone from my chest but I am fighting metastatic brain shrooms.

An ER doctor once told me the best things you can do for yourself is to get sleep, drink water, and stay a mile away from cigarettes.

This is spot on. Exercise has to be in that mix as well.

Nah, I didn't quit smoking until one day I woke up and stopped.

There is no in between. You just have to quit.

Sorry you feel that way. It’s got to be a pain to miss it.

I guess I’m fortunate that each of those things don’t appeal to me. And the combination of the two sound disgusting. I will say that the aroma of coffee (to me) is extremely attractive. If it tasted like it smells, I could see your point about coffee at least.

tl/dr: Everyone has a different addiction. If it’s something bad, fix it or it’ll fix you.
