Lost my brother Friday. He was a heavy forty five year smoker although he quit 10 years ago it was too late. Since then he had bouts of cancer, a-fib, COPD, bad kidneys and liver among other issues. Was the most generous person you ever want to meet. He was the oldest amongst us and always my big bro. Rest well my brother!

An ER doctor once told me the best things you can do for yourself is to get sleep, drink water, and stay a mile away from cigarettes.

sorry for your loss. Its hard to watch that happen to a loved one.

Im a physician and no one escapes tobacco's wrath one way or another. Ive never understood why anyone smokes longterm. At least with bad diet there are pills and shots to overcome its effects. Ive never met a single person who smoked for years who had no effects whatsoever. If they say they havent, they just havent been diagnosed yet.

So sorry for your loss. He sounded like a good dude. Cigarettes really are awful.

Sounds like he made it into his 70s.

That's a damn good run.

Condolences on the loss of your bro, man. Unfortunately, I am getting to the age where I will see this more frequently.

Kind of sucks…everyone gets right to retirement age and we all start passing away.

73 now and quit when I hit 50 after about 25 years of off and on smoking.

Best thing I've done for my overall health. I've lost a lot of friends and family to cancer with many of them attributed to their long-term smoking habit.

I quit cold turkey and haven't even once put a cigarette to my lips since the night I decided enough was enough.

Unfortunately, to this day my wife still smokes and it defies logic since she has lost 2 brothers, her dad and mother to cancer.

Sorry man.

Your brother is out of pain, but at the same time, is a cautionary tale. Smoking kills.

I'm an RT. Every COPD patient I put on oxygen, is most certainly a former smoker. At the very least, they are burdened with planning simple trips to town and calculating how man 02 tanks to bring. At the worst, they are confined to a recliner, struggling to breath, unable to do ANYTHING that used to bring them joy.

Lost my older brother a couple of years ago to COPD and other smoking related complications. Just couldn’t give them up. Sad to see him waste away.

Was a smoker from 19-40. Throughout my 30s was a 2 pack a day smoker. Now, like a dummy I dip. I buy a roll (5 cans) every Sunday. Horrible habit

so quit....every behavior is a choice. Choose to stop. It IS that simple.
Yes you will have some withdrawal but you wont die. Take it an hour at a time.

My fiancée's mother is not too far from that, 50 years of smoking, and there's no way she'd tolerate toting around an oxygen bottle or a concentrator though.
