this was my MIL for the last 3 years of her life and it still didn't stop her from smoking right there on the recliner. She spent most of her life on the recliner. She gave up on life though when she lost her husband a few years prior to being put on O2

its sad watching someone waste away and not give a shite about it because they want to be reunited with their deceased spouse

eta: to the OP, sorry for your loss

i quit smoking in 2010 cold turkey after 14 years. Best investment I made

My brother is going in 60 and has smoked since we were in our early teens. I’ve tried and tried to get him to quit. What’s sad is, as kids we watched our grandmother’s last few years struggling with COPD and congestive heart failure due to a lifetime of smoking. I’ve given up. He’s going to do what he wants to do.

I'm an RT. Every COPD patient I put on oxygen, is most certainly a former smoker. At the very least, they are burdened with planning simple trips to town and calculating how man 02 tanks to bring. At the worst, they are confined to a recliner, struggling to breath, unable to do ANYTHING that used to bring them joy.

Every smoker I've ever met has had the "You're gonna die of something" mentality. I'm sure if they could see into the future, and see they aren't dying of a heart attack in their sleep, or a PE and dropping dead instantly in their kitchen, or in a blaze of glory rescuing a kitten from a house fire, but rather wasting away chained to an O2 bottle for years, they may reconsider.

Im a physician and no one escapes tobacco's wrath one way or another. Ive never understood why anyone smokes longterm. At least with bad diet there are pills and shots to overcome its effects. Ive never met a single person who smoked for years who had no effects whatsoever. If they say they havent, they just havent been diagnosed yet.

Agree smoking is horrible. I quit years ago. With that said you need to be more concerned with obesity.. Most of the comments on here are prob from a bunch of fat asses.. I have seen many mid 70 year old smokers. How many mid 70 year old 300 pounders have you seen? I will answer for you..ZERO
