I was president of our HOA for 7 years, actually put it together obo the developer, drafted the bylaws (with term limits) and first budget. Our was necessary as we own the streets and ran the sewer system, hired security and maintained common grounds (a lot). I spent most of my time being peacemaker between neighbors who wanted to make anonymous complaints (primarily activity related, not structural stuff. I made everyone put a complaint in writing and that shut most of the whining off.

How much is the fine? Pay it in pennies and I’m not joking.

HOAs are frickin stupid.

People who live in a place with HOAs are frickin stupid.

I understand being young and dumb, but now you’ve learned. Never get into that shitty situation again.

Pay the fine, then proceed to study the bylaws intently. Then figure out ways to do stuff that you know would pi$$ them off but are not against the rules. Make it your new hobby to see how many new rules you can cause to be created.

I have heard of some cases where the HOA never enforced a rule, then decided to enforce the rule on one person only. That didn't end well for the HOAs in court. While they are a board and you agreed to the terms, I do not believe they have to ability to selectively (with out a written process) and/or arbitrarily enforce the rules.

No way I could ever put up with a HOA.

So..... they wasted everyone's time and HOA fees that could be better spent on maintaining the neighborhood. That's why HOA's suck.

Kind of but shitty neighbors have a disregard for their fellow neighbors.

If you're ok with your new neighbor turning the street into car storage for his side shadetree mechanic business, that's fine but I bet most wouldn't. Or how about when the old lady that suddenly loses it next door and starts feeding and breeding muscovy ducks and they foul up your pool with tons of duck shite? Maybe your'e ok with that, but most wouldn't. I guess some are ok with the hipster couple that decided to raise chickens and have a rooster crowing at odd hours but most in a suburb wouldn't.

Maybe you don't care about properties holding their value but maybe others do and that's mainly why they are created. Nicer communities create a more desirable location for most people, which in return fetch higher rates for it's tax base which in return provide better services, etc.

Yeah but most HOAs exist to fine people because their trash can is 3 feet from where it's supposed to be.

I could never deal with HOAs. What happens if you just don't pay them? I'd tell them to frick off

This is why I live in the country. I'd end up beating the shite out of those people

They put a lien and get their money when you sell

ETA: my HOA is 40 years old and they only collect money to pay to keep up the parks and common ground. They don't mess with anyone outside of that

How can they take your house if you bought it? If they take it do you still have to pay mortgage payments or do they take over those themselves?

They don’t take it. They put a Lien on the property which would prevent you from selling it, or they go to a judgment against you.

I recently called out my HOA president and treasurer on our subdivision Facebook page after half of our neighborhood received letters for having trash can placed on the side of the house. Just said it was nitpicky and they have nothing better to do than patrol our subdivision to find things to bitch about. They both stepped down the next day. frick HOAs. If you keep your property tidy, I don’t care if you place your trash bin on the side of your house or paint your door Caribbean blue.

True HOA vs third party managed HOA are completely different in my opinion. Third party HOA wants big bucks to mow 10 sq ft of grass for the year and to collect made up fines like this.

A little hyperbolic there and deep down you know that is. Even if you find thta one example like you stated, most people get letter and take offense and want to be defiant instead of just moving the stupid trash can.

You say some care about how their neighborhood looks and you don’t understand why that upsets people. I don’t understand why others opinions of the aesthetics of my home are more important than my own.

As a Realtor, I can assure you that the appearance of other houses affects your resale value when you tried to sell it. You can have a perfectly manicured yard and castle, but if you are living in a place that looks like it's a meth mall, then your property values will fall. For example, the property values in Sherwood Forest were falling even before the floods.

I think HOAs can tend to be controlled by people on a power trip. Thankfully, ours is pretty cool.

No one disagrees with this.

An HOA isn't going to fix that.

I understand the point of an HOA as I'm sure everyone else does. People don't want their hood turned into a glorified trailer park and I'm fine with that. The problem is, most don't exist in that capacity in practice. Having a trashcan on the side of your house, or not getting the can in on trash day because you had to work late, or painting your door blue is not going to affect property values, but these dickheads that run these HOAs don't like it personally so they start doling out fines.

I am about 99% sure it is illegal in Louisiana for a 3rd party HOA to collect any fees or kickbacks from fines or anything else. They sub everything out to independent 3rd parties and collect a small fee from each homeowner for maintaining the HOA, I don't think by law they can make anything but that fee.

Today my HOA President, the cuck that I’m sure complained about my garbage can being around the side of my house, has a guest parked with one tire on the side walk and another tire on the curb... I guess in an effort to not park in the street.

Just park in the fricking street like everybody else you fricking idiot!
