Moved for 3 years. Could have earned twice as much money in Texas but we were bored out of our mind in that strip mall wasteland. Moved back and never regreted it.

True. I was born in Houston, and it's kind of amazing how many people I've known here from my dad's small hometown and parish.

Louisiana is probably the best state in the south and could contend with others outside of the south. It has much to offer. However, our crooked, incompetent leaders keep it bad in order to line their pockets.
Elected leaders are a reflection of the voters. The problem with Louisiana is demographic.

It looked great being in ATL, until my baw the 2nd) was born. After that my goal was to get us back to NOLA where there were grands, aunts/uncles, cousins, etc.
It was great having kids at Catholic grammar schools, then Dominican and Brother Martin, but they both left the area upon adulthood...
Now, im looking for where I should retire. Baldwin Cty, AL is on the shortlist.

Yeah everything is way better. LA is honest to God a bottom 3 state.

Honestly…everything got way better. Can’t believe I stayed in Louisiana for over 10 years after graduating from LSU. Absolutely love the people, food, etc. in Louisiana, but it’s just not worth it. Will enjoy my 2-3 trips back every year to see friends, family and the Tigers.

Youngest in 10, got 8 more years. We've stayed. Honestly I listened to my wife about how and where we lived for way too long. When the youngest graduates I will propose that we leave. If she decides against it I will just move on.

Seems a bit harsh. Where do you want to move to that you would leave your wife for?

I have a few years left until my youngest graduates high school, then it’s college out of state and we’re gone. Wife on board as are a lot of my friends with kids the same age - gone once their kids graduate but not going to pull them from friend groups yet. Should things get much worse and force a move before then we aren’t against it if it makes the most sense for our kids.

We went to Phoenix for 35 years - moved back 3 1/2 years ago.
We like it here but loved Phoenix.
Mucho issues here.

I’ve lived in many states.
This is the case everywhere.

Have you moved away from Louisiana?

every time we vacation the places we go are just nicer. i used to think it was the effect of being in vacation places, but even on the driver everywhere else is nicer.
And that we spent much more time outside when on vacation because of weather not necessarily just vacation. Moved to a place that has 4 seasons and love it.
The lower crime/lack of head on a swivel was a great perk also.

Yes. Also not from here originally.
Our insurance dropped like 60-70% immediately without changing coverage. The crime rate around us plummeted. The public schools are actually functional. We joined a country club that is affordable. There’s not many neighborhoods in our town that are unaffordable. We have nice restaurants near us and chain options as well so whatever your flavor. Same with local shops + bigger chains. About a 30k person town in the heart of rural America. About 90 minutes from 3 major airports if we need them. An hour from my parents. Roads get paved overnight and we rarely see pot holes. Police officers show up in a matter of minutes if you need to call them. Saw them pull up almost immediately to an accident I witnessed today. Very little trash if any on the side of the road. Very little homeless population. We can use the public parks without fear of harassment. We can walk around our neighborhood and if we were feeling adventurous, probably walk into downtown in about half an hour to 45 minutes. Could drive there in like 5-7. Go the other direction we are in straight farmland with incredible farmers markets.
I’m living in heaven on earth right now baw.
Weren't you recently complaining that you couldn't afford to buy a house where you live?

If it works out, more power to them. But a change of surroundings doesn't automatically mean a positive life changing experience. It's always going to depend on the individuals themselves and their ability to seize opportunity.

This would be my #1 factor in considering another place to live. No way would I move somewhere with a similar climate and terrain.

Same, if I’m moving it’s because I hate our climate and topography, nothing else really bothers me all that much in my day to day life.

Summary of responses: Everything is better, so glad we made the moved.* *But we do miss family
I think that’s a completely fair assessment.
If you have a good family dynamic, why wouldn’t you miss it? I love my parents very much, but moved anyway. They were heartbroken at the time, now they say they are so glad I didn’t stay in Baton Rouge and are actively planning their own exit.
Too many people here use family and friends as an excuse to not leave an objectively bad state. Don’t get me wrong, family is great and I do love things about Louisiana, but it’s an objectively bad state by pretty much every metric.
If you want to stay in that situation because you want to be close to family, I think that’s great. There are no wrong answers and whatever makes you happy in life I support.
But to those who use family as an excuse to not make a change…rethink that.

Life was way better after moving. I still miss some things of course.
