Don’t pull off on main road shoulder. Another car can easily hydroplane and end up ramming you on the side of the road.

Instead, pull off on the shoulder of an exit, or even pull thru the intersection and use the entrance ramp shoulder.

You’re not an obstacle there

It may be "illegal" but it's better than the alternative.

In Both of your examples of when you use flashers yiu make the with more dangerous. You’re more likely to get rear ended with flashers on cuz people will think yiu are on the side of the road.

It’s better than everyone knowing who is and isn’t on the road?

this is what irks me, people ad libbing from normal driving rules and doing what they think is improving the situation but in fact they're doing just the opposite

you mean to tell me having your lights on 50% of the time isn't safer than having them on 100%?!

This. What if people (not buses, which are different) started coming to complete stops before railroad tracks to make sure no trains were coming? What if people stop at caution lights to let someone on the side streets through? The rules are standardized for a reason.

Thoughts on this are NOT universal.

THe first thing that came up when I googled "when to use hazard lights":

LINK

quote:

Answer: A driver can use their hazard lights to warn other motorists of a vehicular traffic hazard that requires caution in approaching, overtaking or passing. Situations with limited visibility such as a blizzard, thick fog and heavy rain would constitute a traffic hazard. Other hazardous scenarios could include: • A vehicle having issues maintaining a minimum safe speed. • A flat tire or mechanical breakdown on the shoulder of the road. • An impaired driver or driver conducting dangerous behaviors.

Granted, this is some rando from Minnessota. However I agree with it.

You move down the list and there are differing opinions. Many of which are similar to most of yours.

I would argue that a vehicle on the side of the road in perfect visibility is the least of my worries.

A vehicle going 25mph in a downpour on an interstate is a much bigger concern. Something I should avoid. Just like a vehicle on the side of the road that's completely stopped.

I get it, not so much talking about flashers, more like the examples the guy above you brought up

Another occasion I use it is on sudden freeway/interstate slow downs or stops. People just don't pay attention and often aren't prepared to stop--secondary accidents happen all the time this way. I'll hit the flashers until traffic behind me has slowed. Brake lights mean nothing in this situation. A brake light to shave off a half mph looks exactly the same as a panic-stop brake light. IDGAF what's legal about it. Anything I can do to increase visibility in a potentially deadly situation, I'll do it.

If your regular headlights are on we can see you. What else do you need?

Yeah, it’s also against the law to do 1 mph over the speed limit. But people do it.

I have to assume that it is legal to put them on when the traffic in front of you on the interstate is slowing in an extraordinary manner, creating an actual hazard for cars and trucks behind you.

I agree with you but when the wipers don’t go any faster the only tool I’m left with is turning in the flashers. Safety before manners.

What? Driving with your hazard lights on is not safe, particularly in low visibility.

It signals to other drivers that you are stopped.

first time I ever went to NYC one thing that stood out was that there were traffic signs on the street posting fine amounts for honking your horn

Most of the cabbies can't read the signs anyway.
