Its kind of strange you think those are the only two options...

Don't go down this road. My issue was with your suggestion that she got full aid by filing "independent," which is something Harvard, the other Ancient 8, and similar schools do not allow unless the student has a really fricked up home life. What you showed is NOT evidence of a filing for independent status. What you showed is evidence of her parents showing less than $100k income on the CSS Profile.

Yet, she got it, and its driving you crazy..

Her and her mom never bonded, she's lived up here for the last several years, pays her own bills, etc. I have two that live here, one isnt my relative, but my GDs best friend who is an orphan, I'm all she has. That girl is going to U Maine.

We submitted all with verification, they approved it. Its your problem that you dont understand it, not ours.

why do you repeat stupid shite?

It's not stupid to say because there are millions of students that are taking on $20K to $40K of debt for degrees that don’t produce enough income to justify it. IMO, that makes those degrees worthless but I could see where you could consider worthless too strong of a word

quote:

why does the average college grad make a million more than the average without over the course of a life time?

Because the average includes the top 25% of degree like engineering, computer science, finance, nursing, and other high ROI fields earning far more than both noncollege workers and most other college majors. These highest earning degrees pull the overall average upward, creating the appearance that “college” in general produces a million dollar lifetime advantage, even though most degrees do not.

I can guarantee you that every IBEW wireman on that job is making something close to that.

They have to pay what the scale says for that local, and that's probably in the high $40's/hr, and if they're still struggling to get JW's, they up the pay, add per diem, etc.

It's a great time to be a union hand.

well dont let your kid choose the dumb degrees. in the end its up to the parents to guide them. I just meant a degree isnt worthless and most good jobs require it as a barrier of entry.

ok cool, so under 100k a year before OT, to make the money you are talking about and many in this thread claim, they have to work shite loads of OT.

same reason people make fun of the operators on here. they do make 150k a year, but they mostly make about 45-50 an hour and then they work a bunch of OT which the operators on here like to leave out.

same with the tradesman....the OT loves to claim they make bank...but they dont on average, even using median they dont. the ones that do work 2k in OT hours per year and live in an RV out of town. Thats fine and dandy if that is the lifestyle you want.

but dont come on here and act like making 150k as an electrician is the same as making 150k as an engineer or a tech bro who sleeps in his own bed every night and makes that with no OT just because he went to college.

that was my whole point. Again I hope all the OT sends their kids in to the trades, i beg you.

75% of degrees could be considered dumb degrees when you add debt to the equation.

I don't disagree.

That depends on the degree.

Really thats where you are going? cope much? Because I showed that yall are fricking retarded when it comes to painting the whole picture? So you claim i have big feelings because i used math to show how the OT is retarded with its claims of the OT making bank?

look i was in the trades, did it for a long time, im an engineer now and have been for a long time too....been on both sides, trust me, its better on the management and office side of things

but how about this

Median salary for journeyman electrician

non union in LA- $58,200 or $26-28/hour
Union in LA is actually less at $58,198 or $27.98

Non Union in the US- $61,635 or $29.732
Union in the US-$75,643 or $36/hour

but hey the OT knows every single electrician that is in the 99% of pay for that profession.

Im not downing the trades, Im simply asking yall to be honest, especially with young boys and stop acting like it puts you on a path to be in the top 10% of earners like yall tend to claim. Its an honest living and I know a lot of great people that do it, but lets stop the pretending and tell it like it is.

Just a few points on this:

1. Most guys chasing out of state dollars are set up to chase out of state dollars. Camper, traveling buddies, etc. Work for the same contractors and build a reputation.
2. I gave you a range for the Direct Hires, Supervision makes way more than directs, not to mention truck allowances, phones, gas cards, etc.
3. You cannot build a facility with just helpers, so no; the majority of people on the job aren't making $30 which would be a person green off the street with no skill set. Say a firewatcher or a flagman. A skilled Mechanic would be at $150.
4. Foremen make a few dollars more than mechanics, so they are above the top of the scale.
5. I told you they updated the prevailing wages. You can try to go out there with low wage people, but they will quickly leave. I have seen whole jobsites shut down because a contractor on the same project is paying a $1 more an hour.
6. Also, most of the guys chasing out of town money don't work a full year. They work nine months and then come home when it gets really cold and go hunting or vacations, fishing, whatever.
7. There are a ton of people that have been doing that for thirty years, but usually if you get to that stage, you have moved to Supervision or another job where you aren't travelling. However, even mtce workers who stay at the same facility forever, still have to go outside and do some work. Plant Operators the same.

You are literally making all these assumptions, but most of those travelling guys work 9 months out the year and have a paid for new truck, boat, golf cart, side by side, etc. You can't compare what industrial workers make to the local guy who does residential electrical work or carpentry makes. Same as offshore workers, and so on and so on.

The schedule of 6-10's or 7-12's is pretty standard for large industrial projects. Most of these guys won't even go on a job if it doesn't have OT. So that guy is making 10 hours of time and a half every week at minimum. Even the guys staying home are getting that.

spent a year as an apprentice with IBEW 136 in Birmingham. First 6 months there they didn't have enough work for close to half of the new apprentice class. Then during the Biden admin they shut down the coal plants that staffed a large portion of the entire local and it turned into an even bigger crap show.

On the flip side, my cousin with IBEW in the Biloxi area is overflowing with work. Just depends on the local and where they staff people.

mechanics dont make a $150 an hour

I handle rate sheets and rate build up sheets for some of the largest industrial contractors in the US...you are full of shite

there are no foreman making 150 an hour either. again full of shite. unless your one of those guys including every single benefit they get in that wage and even then that is a huge stretch. Normal people dont include their benefits in their wage nor their OT nor their per diem.

yea no shite, real steady job there

i am work in these facilities I know all that. doesnt change a damn thing about what i said

i work in a refinery dude, i know wtf they make and yall are full of complete shite. even the most senior electrician at an industrial facility isnt making close to $150 an hour. You realize i can go look at the contracts we have with the unions at all of our refineries right?

yea thats fine and i get many are set up for that.....doesnt change the fact its a dog shite life. especially working 7/12 9 of 12 months. fricking miserable.

Im grateful some want to do that though.....but just be honest up front

dont come on here and say...im an electrician and i make 200K+ and then leave out the fact you works 2000 extra hours in the 9 months you worked that year. Dont include you benefits in the salary either.

I have some trades as clients. I don't think I would recommend someone become a bricklayer or carpenter, but the pipe trades guys seem to carve out solid careers. But, yeah, it's hard on the body and can be a lot of travel.

And for the guys on here that say, just start a contracting company and that's where you'll make your money. The average baw in the field can't just go out and get all the insurance coverages, payroll, accounting, and possibly legal support to get anything other than a tiny company up and running.
