My 68 year old 2nd cousin with 40+ years of electrician experience decided to come out of retirement and got hired by an outfit in Mississippi building a new nuclear reactor facility.

He's not a lineman, not a supervisor or manager, just a regular arse electrician.

They are paying him $6,100 a week in addition to $150 a day per diem.

They expect the project to last about 15 years.

I know, cool story bro. Just passing along an opportunity for someone.

My son went to college for one semester dropped out and said “Dad, I think I wanna go and be a lineman”..Went to lineman school... Three years later, he’s making more money than I did being 15 years in my profession.

Running wires in a new build is a good gig

Same with new construction plumbing

I have a friend who specializes in whole home generators that makes freaking bank

The money is out there... go grab it

I have a cousin that did the same. He went to junior college for 6 months to get certified while his twin graduated college and became a geologist.

The lineman makes more.

Everyone I know says lineman lose a finger every 7-8 years.

Not sure if urban myth or not.

Going into the trades is the OT’s version of volunteering for military service after Pearl Harbor or 9/11

I have two master electricians that work for me for licensing and otherwise just have an office job and I pay them both about 300k a year. It’s insane.

I guess he just likes to work? Otherwise he must be planning on retiring when he is 75 and living the good life until 78 when he dies.

How long are they expecting him to last?

It can be a great career, but not every electrician is rolling in dough

Intuitively I’d think there would be a fairly high risk of electrocution, although I don’t know what the actual stats on that are.

When I’m 68, the last thing I’ll want to be doing is wiring shite up in tight spaces in Mississippi until I’m 83. To each their own.

If you want your son to become an electrician, the last thing you should do is tell other parents to also steer their sons into being electricians.

If a bunch of other people also become electricians, then the salary of an electrician will go way down. Basic concept of supply and demand.

No idea.

My 72 year old dad told me about it.

He's a retired electrician. He's considering rejoining the work force.

My sons aren't going into electrical work. One is going to be a pilot. The other is in sales.

Heck, I’m self employed but I’d consider taking a 15yr break
