As his critics sometimes point out, all you have to do is go straight to his songs. The man who sang “imagine no possessions” lived a millionaire’s life in a posh New York hotel. The man who sang “imagine no religion” was obsessed with every spiritual and New Age fad that came his way, including Hindu meditation, the I-Ching, and astrology of all kinds. The man who sang “all you need is love” was a bitter, violent, and angry man who abused his family and friends. The man who praised having “nothing to kill or die for” helped finance and publicize radical groups who extolled the use of violence. Quite literally, everything his fans see personified in the icon of John Lennon represents the ideals the man himself either couldn’t or wouldn’t live up to.

This is pretty much Mark David Chapman’s manifesto so you should probably be put on a watch list.

That was mostly George Harrison, I think.

agree with OP about everything except:
quote:

Beatles were garbage too

Very solid song list.

Meh, he didn't live nearly as posh a lifestyle as other rock stars of the time. He and yoko lived in a small, inexpensive apt in NYC for years. Towards the end of his life he had moved to a more expensive place. Imagine getting older and wanting a more comfortable lifestyle.

Religion is not the same as spirituality. That line was about the problems caused by organized religion. Imagine wanting to learn about different beliefs.

Yep, and he admitted so and was getting professional help with this. Imagine trying to deal with your shortcomings.

Rebellion is often violent, ask George Washington or David Ben-Gurion who both killed British troops as British troops killed their people.

Imagine being human.

Imagine the lyrics of a song being conflated with your life.

John Lennon was a narcissistic anti-social sociopath. Just an all around waste of oxygen. I'm agnostic on the other Beatles, although I do enjoy George Harrison's solo work.

He was a kid who was elevated to iconic fame and wealth and did not have the wisdom to deal with it. I would not say he was a POS, just an unfortunate kid who rose too fast.

The Sixties music scene transformed what was pop music then. Unless you were a teenager/adult living at that time you have no idea how much the Beatles music influenced
the changes.

Lennon was a bag o'shite person, no doubt. His hubris and entitlement was the initial spark for the Beatles though. After they were world famous Paul and George's genius became apparent. As a musician and songwriter Lennon is extremely overrated and overcredited in the Beatles catalog.

It was because Paul was being controlling.

If you actually watched it, John was the one who goes to bat for George.

My daughter started liking The Beatles about a year ago. After she did some research she said, “John Lennon was a pretty terrible person.” She’s 15

You can knock his playing skills if you like, but to knock his song writing skills is ridiculous

I don't care for Lennon's communist wishes, but there is literally no way you can label him and his music as a "piece of crap".

The Beatles ruled the music world for a decade.
They had a wide variety of music from pop to rock.
His solo work after the split up is marginal. Respectable, but maybe not legendary outside a couple of songs.

But, for a musician to stand the test of time, is remarkable and must be acknowledged.

The best thing that ever happened to John Lennon’s legacy was him being murdered.

You do know that he became more conservative as he got older, right?

John was a terrible human being. The Beatles as a whole were fricking amazing, so to say they were garbage is pretty ignorant. But of course this is the same board that shits on Garth Brooks and even George Strait at times.
