BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Enoch Pratt Free Library has apologized and removed a tweet after one of their branches showed African American children in mock jail mugshots as a promotion for “Banned Books Week.”

quote:

According to our media partner, The Baltimore Sun, the Pratt Library’s post Monday included photos of four different children holding books and a black piece of paper that read “CAUGHT READING BANNED BOOKS” in front of a police lineup backdrop.

quote:

The pictures were meant to get kids to read, but instead they got people mad.

quote:

“That’s kind of like a target towards black people,” Shawn S. said. “You’ve got to do something bad to get a mug shot. A mug shot is not fun.”

quote:

“As a black female, I see my black son in a picture that looks like a mugshot. It looks like a stereotype. It doesn’t look anything like a library picture, that anyone’s having fun or learning something out of it,” Kelly Daly said. She also called it “very offensive.”

I can certainly understand how this may be offensive to some people of a specific race, but I think as long as all races participated in this photo shoot, it should have been a non-issue.

You can't be serious. Just one photo of a non-white would be "offensive" to the easily offended.

Can't just be happy that her son is taking the initiative to visit the library, check out a book, and do some reading. Gotta make it a race issue.

I get it. But it was an absolutely neutral and clever idea. Kids seemed to enjoy it, too.

Non-issue; move along, people.

I should start a consultation service for organizations looking to do any type of marketing. The amount of shockingly bad decisions they make is hysterical.

I've got no issues with the mug shots, but who thought that was a good idea?

Probably not the best idea, especially considering the social climate we live in right now, but I just don't see how people get so worked up about absolutely everything. If k was one of the parents I might would call and say that was distasteful and be mad, but I also realize it's not the end of the damn world. That's the problem with all this stuff. They can't separate real problems from things that are distasteful but petty and insignificant at the end of the day.

It's only racist if you associate black kids with prisoners.

I hate getting into topics like this, but this is actually true when you stop and think about it. We've gone from trying to make a good faith effort of not portraying minorities in a bad light as par for the course, to NEVER portraying them in that way.

Think about that little thing that runs before movies at the theater...the one that says something about "This is obnoxious" with some a-hole talking on his phone...then "This is rude" with some girl playing on her phone...then "This is illegal" with some dick recording the movie. Thing they all have in common...all white people. Weird...

And not just criminals...idiots in general. Direct TV commercial with an attractive young black couple sitting on their couch enjoying their Direct TV and then talks about idiots who still like cable. the fat white a-hole who likes banging his head on the attic plank, the stupid white bitch who drinks spoiled milk, some random white moron who sleeps in poison ivy, then some thief/idiot who got his hand caught in a vending machine.

I mean...I get that it was wrong to largely portray black folks or minorities in general in bad lights, but can we at least admit that there are criminals of ALL colors...idiots of all shades? The whitewashing...uh-oh) of all negative images ever of minorities is silly.

Girl in the top right corner goes from 5'8" to 6'5" when you add her hair.

It's actually rather humorous AND ironic to me. Librarians are, by-and-large, quite liberal. Being in the field, I don't really go to conferences or anything else, much, anymore, because I'm really out of place.

Hell, 20 years ago, when I was getting my masters at LSU SLIS, the dean at the time thought that the voting age of 18 was way too high, and that we should let kids have the franchise by the time they turned 6.

This is the profession that fought the Patriot Act tooth-and-nail, even AFTER it was revealed that the 9/11 hijacker/bombers did most of their research and communications on library computers!

This right here is the problem. She's perpetuating the "black criminal" stereotype

It's Baltimore. That's probably the exclusive demographic in that area. It's surely targeted at young black kids to get them reading. The people who made that decision were probably black.

It portrays that part of the "conversation" that we are supposed to ignore. An honest assessment could be offense, but it could also be "we see Baltimore's minority youth in pictures like this for bad activity too often. Let's get them in there for something positive."

I feel like PC marketing consultant is gonna be a real thing soon. Someone who majored in what is/is not offensive to what demographics. I really think you could fill up 4 years with that info.

JFC. I’ve seen several of these kinds of pics this week. They were all with 30-something white librarians. This looking for shite to offend is over the top ridiculous.
