Ronald Reagan was a lifeguard. He saved 78 lives. The last came as governor of California when his lifeguard instincts kicked in during a party at the mansion. He jumped in a pool and saved a 7 year old girl from drowning

George Washington had a terrible relationship with his mother. When he was president, she wrote letters to newspapers lamenting her destitute status.

He didn’t even go to her funeral.

Interesting how I ended up reading about Reagan’s amazing lifeguarding skills (which I had never heard of before) twice in a few hours.

Betty Page was actually very smart. She graduated Salutatorian in her large high school class in Nashville and just barely missed being Valedictorian. At the time Vanderbilt had a rule that every Valedictorian in Nashville got a scholarship. She really wanted to go to Vandy but she couldn't afford the tuition so she wound up a pinup girl.

Also, Hedy Lammar, another classic beauty from that era was wicked smart and spent most of her free time inventing things and doing science experiments. Her most notable invention was a frequency hopping system she designed for the Navy to guide their torpedoes. The Navy told her to use her looks and fame to sell war bonds instead. After her patent expired the system she designed became a standard basis for a lot of our modern cellphone and wifi technology.

Well then let me add one. Charles Durning was a Ranger in WWII and once killed a German in close quarters combat with a rock. Up close and personal.

EDIT: I see AUFANATL beat me to Hedy Lamarr. Ill leave the post intact anyway.

Also in Hollywood, Hedy Lamarr co-developed spread spectrum radio technology and shared the patent for it. Neither she nor George Antheil were trained engineers. Both were self-taught tinkerers with a gift for invention. In her spare time Lamarr also developed improved traffic light system and an instant carbonated drink mixture.
