No, but I do bite my thumb sir.

I had a friend in school, he was black. We played football together. He was the running back. He asked out the homecoming queen and they burned a cross in his front yard

My dad was born in a small town in Nebraska. The first black person moved there when I was like 15 so around 98-99.
My dad never saw a black person until he joined the air force.

Same here. In high school we were friends with the blacks who played football and other sports with us. Still friends with many of them. Pouppee, Womb, Flint, Duck, Lip, Apple..

I went to a very small, rural school in LA.
In my 13 years at this school, we only had 1 black kid for a very short time. His name was Reggie.
All the rednecks loved to frick with Reggie. It was constant.
One day, one of the dumbest, but biggest rednecks, was fricking with Reggie after PE in the locker room.
Reggie had enough. Reggie walked up to dumb, big redneck and grabbed his dick/balls and squeezed and pulled and twist. Dumb, big redneck hit his knees and began to scream and cry.
Reggie never said a word and eventually let go after dumb, big redneck had began to just softly wail.
Nobody fricked with Reggie after that.

Nvm.
I hunt in rural north Mississippi and Louisiana. Racism is alive and well there for sure.

I'm not from the South so I have no growing up there stories. I'm an Upstate New Yorker originally but have lived about half my life in the south. Mainly because I was in the Navy and then married a black girl from North Carolina. Lived in NC for a decade, never had any issues down there. Most people don't give a shite. You might get an odd look or a stare now and again. Not a big deal.
We live in Jersey now. We seem to draw more attention up here then we ever did down south. On vacation, particularly cruises, is actually when we get the weirdos saying inappropriate shite to us. And every black girl in the Carribean wants to touch my wife's hair.

The day Karl Malone called me a racist:
I was in Ruston and me and some buddies were driving to a friends house. He lived in Farmerville. This being Ruston and us being dumb college kids, one of my buddies hopped in the back of the my other buddy's shitty truck because we didn't have room in the cab. The buddy that jumped in the back of the cab happened to be black.
Halfway there, we discover that we have a flat. We pull over and are in the process of changing flat.
Karl Malone pulls up. We all get excited because its fricking Karl Malone and he is going to save us.
Karl Malone looks at my buddy sitting in the back of the truck and says "these boys made you ride in the back of the truck?"
My buddy tries to explain, but Karl Malone was having no part of it and told him to "you better learn to respect yourself" and just fricking left.
Karl Malone sucks.

With my anecdotal evidence, I'm a younger black guy who has lived his entire life in the south, (LA, AL, GA).
I technically never had my first real white friend until college. This isnt to say I have never seen a white person before, but I always went to an all-black school, or an all-black church. But with any interactions growing up with white people I did have, they were all nice. I had a handful of classmates or teachers who were white, and they were all cool. After learning about slavery and racism in school, part of me expected the white people around me to be super racist, but that was never my experience. Even if my family got pulled over in the car, I never saw a white cop be racist toward us. They were usually very blunt, and they dont like to crack a smile at anything(no matter how many jokes my dad tries to make with him). But they'll give us a ticket and be on the way, no longer than 5-10 minutes at the longest.
Once I got to college, it was my first time in my life not being at a school that wasn't predominantly black. With some of the friends I met in college, they were some of the nicest or coolest people I ever met. If I needed a ride to Walmart, no problem. If I needed a role of toilet paper because I was out, no problem. If I was hungry, but had no money, they would buy me food and don't even expect for me to pay them back. Hell, going to the white frat parties were the best thing ever. Everyone offering me free beer, shite was a blast. (Youre not getting into a black frat party unless youre a girl or you know the people who throwing it, and you sure as hell don't get to drink the alcohol.)
On the opposite end, the white girls at my school were extremely stuck up and stand off-ish. Perhaps they were racist, but idk. If I ever tried to go up and start conversation, they would automatically walk away without so much as looking my way. In Biology class, we had a group project, me and my friend (black guy) were trying to find a 3rd partner. We asked this white girl sitting next to us, her response, "No thanks, I do not feel comfortable working with the 2 of you." Or my last bit of anecdotal evidence, my roommate(white guy) threw a party in our apartment. This white girl came in, looked around, looked directly in my face, (she was obviously drunk also), and yelled out "why didnt anyone tell me ni""ers were gonna be at this party. This sucks." My roommate immediately went up to her and told her "bitch you can get the frick out my house" and proceeded to mush her forehead until she was out the door. That scene may honestly be one of the highlights of my time in college. Not because he stuck up for me but it was so damn funny. He tried to check on me to make sure I was ok, but I was too busy literally rolling on the floor laughing.
I had another white friend told me that alot of white girls are slick racist. That's because their entire life they are told by their daddy to never ever date a black guy. That black guys are the devil and they will knock you up and then proceed to leave you and the baby. Or the off chance he does stay, he will never work and instead sit at home on the couch all day. To take it further if they were to ever even bring a black guy home to meet the parents, the parents would basically cut her off from the family.
White boys growing up dont get that lecture in the least bit. As my friend so eloquently put it, you like pussy, sports, and alcohol. I like pussy, sports, and alcohol. So how the hell are we different.
Tl;Dr. I have had very few if any interactions with racism in the south. I love my white friends to death. We'd kill for each other. But on the other hand white women can be very difficult.

Late ‘50s early ‘60s
Had no black children at the school I went to
Gas stations had three restrooms MEN, WOMEN, COLORED
Separate water fountains WHITE, COLORED
My wife’s grandmother had a store and would not allow blacks in the store
They’d have to tell her what they wanted and she’d bring it to the door.
Almost like what’s going on now, but different reasons

My grandmother's black housekeeper, who came every day except Sunday and was like a grandmother to multiple generations, wouldn't let the black man who worked outside into the house for lunch because in her words he was a "yard ______".

My grandfather was a school principal from the 1950's through the 1970's. When I was in the sixth grade, we had a project where we interviewed the oldest member of our family, so I interviewed him. One of the suggested interview questions was "What was the saddest day of your life?" Most people would say when a parent or spouse died or something to do with WWII. Not him. His answer was "when the school board ordered me to desegregate the school." He obeyed the order to a tee, and the klan ended up burning a cross on his front lawn for doing so.

Ive always assumed every black person knows each other.
Especially in smaller towns.
They live all bunched up in the same area.
Which was always referred to as “across the tracks”or “down in the quarters.”

I went to HS in a small east Texas town and we had a pretty good sized yard with driveways on both ends of the house that made for a good yard to play football.
My mom was always at work so no adults were home. Kids used to come over and play ball during the summer and when we'd take water breaks she said the white kids could come inside for water but the black kids had to drink from the hose.
That's just the way it was back then in the 80's.

I have an interesting one:
In college (mid-90s), I worked in an office part-time. There was an old man in his 90s who still had an office there and would come in for a few hours a day. He didn't really do any work but didn't want to sit around with his wife waiting to die. I think he was born in like 1902 or something, so needless to say his views were not very "progressive".
The guy bragged to me and others that he owned slaves when he was a young boy. He grew up on a farm in rural South Carolina. His parents or grandparents had owned some slaves and after the Civil War they just stayed on because they had nowhere else to go and no other job skills. And so did their children Apparently this was not that unusual as the whole 40 acres and a mule thing didn't pan out.
Anyway, this guy was adamant they they were referred to as 'slaves' and they were required to do his bidding and he was considered an 'owner' even though he was a child. He also talked about how wonderful it was.

My dad is 65. He says when he was in grammar school they could only play with the black kids through the chain link fence that ran through the middle of the school.
I find that hard to believe- I am 63, went to grammar school in New Orleans with blacks, never had a problem playing sports or hanging out with them. In fact, by 8th grade, my best friend at school was black.

One of my best was a young black girl. Smart as a whip, well spoken, always tried hard and excelled. Well one day I split them into groups and found her at a desk by herself in the corner crying. I asked her what was wrong. She told me that the other kids were making fun of her for “acting white” because she tried hard and wanted to learn.
One of our friends is like this. Did well in school despite family being low income. Got scholarships to college and took out loans for medical school. His family is constantly rude and makes "acting white" comments non stop. Now that he is a doctor and dating an Asian woman, he has basically been disowned.
