I’ve read some compelling arguments that AGI is not even possible.

I think humans will accept that it exists long before it actually/ever does.

This isn’t the same as the singularity. But, I’m like you. I don’t believe it is manufacturable. It will be faked and sold as real thought. And that’s probably enough.

AGI for artificial intelligence will be what Kitty Hawk was for flight. Right now we're at the paper airplane stage of AI capability.

And it is going to happen. Probably very soon. I don't think people realize just how much money and resources are currently being devoted to achieving it. Adjusted for inflation, American tech companies are spending more money per year on AI research and development than the entire costs of the Manhattan Project and Apollo Program, combined. And they're not doing it to fool more boomers with Sora clips or help high-schoolers write better essays about books they didn't read.

The first jet aircraft took flight 36 years after Kitty Hawk. The SR-71 came 61 years after the Wright Flyer. I cannot imagine what the world is going to look like 60 years after AGI is achieved.

AI singularity

There is also a concept of Robotic physical singularity too. That's when we move from "I bought a robot lawn mower" to "My robot knew if was time for them to go mow the yard with the lawnmower I already have".

I have yet to find someone who thinks the endgame of AI is a good thing.

You haven’t looked very hard. I’ve read numerous articles that say that, and Elon Musk says it, too.

I just don’t understand why we keep attempting to advance it.
Have you considered AI's benefits, such as enormous energy and water usage, streamlining the surveillance of everything we do, the devaluation of and reduction in demand for human labor, and (perhaps most importantly), the potential for making those who are already astoundingly wealthy and powerful even more wealthy and powerful at everyone else's expense?

Sounds pretty good now, doesn't it?

One such metric, defined by Translated, a Rome-based translation company, is an AI’s ability to translate speech at the accuracy of a human.

The Roman’s haven’t done shite in 1000 years and I’m supposed to believe they’re going to be responsible for the largest technological advancement in history?

Elon musk talks about the need for UBI because there will be no jobs for humans.

If you think a mass amount of the world’s population being jobless will be a net positive then you have a very positive outlook on humanity.

Quantum computing is the wildcard. It's progressing much faster than I thought possible just a few months ago.
