In aviation there's always going to be someone who fricks up big sooner or later.

You realize there is another pilot posting in this thread?

Where is 777tiger?
He called me earlier, he's flying a girl's group for a Bachelorette party to Vegas.

Does anyone think that was a helicopter?

The track shows the helicopter was just flying along and above the river.

Visual separation at night can be tricky, as you don’t have much depth perception.

I’d imagine these flight paths are usually pretty cut and dry for the airlines, especially in dc of all places, I’d be surprised if this was the fault of the airline.

The Class B extends a ways out form DCA for 20 miles surface to 10k and also surrounds Andrews AFB. I'm not familiar with DCA's ops but I'd be surprised if ATC wasn't normally in communication with those aircraft. Maybe the helo violated airspace, we don't know yet.
Looks like ATC was in contact as expected and even instructed the Blackhawk.
Something happens and that's it

Yeah who was on the helicopter is a secondary, but potentially significant question i suppose

And we should hope this was not intentional.
In my, albeit layman’s opinion, the responsibility for this tragedy lays in one of two places:
1. The chopper pilot
or
2. Air traffic control.
I say this because it appears the AA aircraft was where it was supposed to be and doing what it was supposed to be doing.

Virtually 0% chance, IMO.

I hope this doesn't turn into some rogue military guy wanting to suicide himself in some gruesome, grand way.
A Blackhawk is going to have at least two other people on board, a copilot and a crew chief. That would make the rogue actor scenario much less likely.

I wonder if PAT thought the RJ was going to RWY 1 instead of 33

And appears we have a couple of ATC guys here judging by their responses

I just flew out of there Sunday and bought an Evian water that rang up $6.66. I gave them an extra penny.

That’s what air traffic controllers are for

Seems from the ATC communication the H60 was told to fly behind the CRJ….the flight path on the H60 looks very odd and doesn’t look like he tried to fly behind him. Something weird

This idiot on news nation saying that the army crew might have been using NVGs… all credibility lost
