Zachary Community School Board members started their new terms of office Tuesday under a cloud that has been hanging over the city for the past week: uncertainty about the effects of massive layoffs at the Georgia-Pacific mill in nearby Port Hudson.
The company’s announcement last week that it will stop producing office paper, downsize the plant and eliminate about 650 jobs has raised alarm in Zachary. The facility, a top employer in the area, is located outside the city limits but within the school district and is a major source of tax revenue.

I'm still not exactly sure if the school is a part of EBR or not

It is an independent school system.

120 workers get to move them and their families to right outside DFW, save on insurance and state tax, plus have TCU for their kids to go to.
Lucky bastards!

before all of the Together Baton Rouge stuff started?
You mean where the TBR people have called for stronger oversight of FUTURE ITEP grants?
If the company was planning some expansion at the plant, was counting on ITEP for the expansion, and decided to not even try for the ITEP, and with no expansion, the plant no longer makes sense to keep going as it is, then you might have a point.
That's a lot to consider.
Industrial companies get leaner as we go along. If this is a small plant in their system and a bigger plant can handle all the work, that's an easy decision to make.

Glad I sold my house in Beaver Creek this summer and downsized.

this can't be a quiescence.

Yes, both these plants pay the majority of their taxes to EBR Parish. If they are in the City of Zachary zone of influence though, they may get fire protection, police protection and school services from Zachary. Zachary will lose tax revenue based on the employees and families who may now have to move and will no longer be spending money in Zachary. However, its not like 770 families are all just going to leave Zachary at the same time.

what did zachary do?
This is all b/c CHS alumni scheming. They know one day the stupid LHSAA pull its head out its own arse and CHS and ZHS will be in the same 5A district.
What better way to give CHS a chance to beat Zachary in 5 years?

Wouldn't they pay taxes to EBR parish govt. since they are in EBR parish?
The Zachary school district has a total property tax millage of 79.20 mills (compared to EBR total school millage of 43.45 mills) plus the City of Zachary has its own property tax millage of 5.48 mills (compared to Baton Rouge's 6.9 mills) and the Zachary fire department millage of 9.00 mills (compared to Baton Rouge fire department millage of 6.00 mills).

So Zachary pays EBR Schools taxes as well as Zachary schools taxes?
