A 175 pound man falling 3000 feet would generate around 500,000 lbs of force upon impact. I would imagine the body would literally splat.

I’ve had the privilege to meet and get to know Alex and Peter. Peter is very much alive and helped Alex practice on the route to get ready. Don’t know where the comment about him being dead came from.

You’ll really enjoy the movie and try to see the climber’s cut version which has even more climbing footage. Seeing it on the big screen really puts his effort in perspective. My hands sweat just writing this and thinking about it again. He’s free soloed several amazing very hard routes in Yosemite and made them look like 5.7. Peter Croft is also one of the best at this game. Special guys practicing their craft. Awesome!

I think your mathematics are a tad messed up here.

Based on Newton's 2nd law:
F=ma
F=(175lb/32.2)×32.2
F= 175lb

However, we could calculate the Energy that he would hit the ground with: (Assuming he reached terminal velocity...I want to say it be close from 3000')

E=(1/2)mv^2
E=(1/2)(175/32.2)(173.885)^2
E= 82,163-Joules

...but yes, he would still go splat

Well if you're gonna post this pic, I have to post a link to the hilarious story of the taking this pic:

https://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=78334

The picture was taken by a hero of mine, the late great Galen Rowell, who was a legendary climber, adventurer, and photographer. He talked about this assignment in his own writings, but the post above was by Werner Braun, one of two assistants (both legendary climbers themselves) helping Rowell that day.

People who do extreme sports don’t generally ask for or expect sympathy when they frick up. They know and accept the consequences.

Was wrong about his death, Google fricked me (a Peter Croft died in February...just not THE Peter Croft).

The Rostrum free solo...Alex didn’t do it in 2007 as third FS attempt?

Well then I can’t trust Google at all. Should have known Peter wasn’t 81, the guy who died was...

IDK, I spent a good bit of time in the Valley in the late 90s, but it’s a been a while.
