I can. I run one mile every afternoon (when Ihave time) as fast as I can. I don't want repetitive use injuries but I still enjoy running. I run an 8:20 mile. I'm knocking on the door of 50 and I'm a decent size guy, I weight 250ish and have a 38" waist for reference.

Let me try to put it in a way you can unnerstand-

What if a volcano is erupting behind you?

Or if you are at waters’ edge on a long flat coastal plain and there’s a tsunami heading your way?

Or some greedy oil prospecting company cracked the retaining wall to the secret huge underground chamber full of living (and HUNGRY!) dinosaurs and the creatures all came out running after you???

That’s MY Johnsonville commercial idea.

PS: I run because “it’s there”.

Put me in the column of folks here who can run a sub seven minute mile.

10 minute mile isn't walking.

Last mile I ran was a 7:47 this past summer

I think you’re overestimating the physical ability of the “average person”. Unless someone is a competitive power walker or something, they’re not walking a 10 minute mile.

The average person is walking a 20 minute mile. And the majority of adults can’t run a 10 minute mile, let alone 9.

Most people wouldn't pace themselves to 9:30/mi or whatever.

Mile 1: 8:15 "This is easy!"
Mile 2: 10:30 "I'll catch my second wind!"
Mile 3: 12:15 "I'll run 5 steps then walk 10 then run another 5 and oh my god how is that old lady passing me"

Every 5k I enter, there is at least one 12 year old that takes off way ahead of most everyone.
By the half mile marker, he is walking.
Oh, and your above accurate scenario, you forgot about that grueling last tenth of a mile, that , if you're winded, feels like having to cross a large desert.

I definitely can. I've got some pulmonary issues that deep me from running but walking fast isn't much of an issue.

My go-to 5k move is to save about 3% energy and go all-out for the last .1, sometimes just the last .05, and pass as many people as possible within sight of the finish line. I'm a complete turtle, so it's my one shining moment to feel like a big man. People get pissed.

I haven't ran in a long time and I am out of shape. I might be dead wrong but for one time I think I could force myself to run a 9 min mile.

You can walk 9 minute miles? Damn. That is fast. I can walk fast, but anything above 5 mi/hr / 12 minute miles on a treadmill requires a slow jog for me.

I’m not sure why people are downvoting this.

For most people it’s actually an easier stride to simply jog 6 mph versus trying to speed walk at 6 mph.

A 9 minute single mile should be easy for every non-handicapped, relatively young person to do.

I’m in average shape at best and could do this tomorrow.

Yeah, I've read for an average person, somewhere around 13 minutes per mile it's easier to walk than jog. But any faster and it's actually less taxing to just jog it. Walking 10 minute miles is fast.
