Why? Just curious, really. My neighbor rents out a room and it stays booked. Why would anyone want to stay in a room in someone else’s house while that family is actively living there and at home?
Help me understand. For the price, an acceptable hotel room isn’t that much more if at all more.
Is it a liberal thing? Wanting to experience “community” or some shite? I just don’t get it I guess.

I stayed in one in Boulder a few years back and have no complaints. The folks who owned the house were cool af and went to a couple of breweries with us. Pretty nice house, too.

I stayed in one in San Jose CA. Was within walking distance of the client office and waaay cheaper than a hotel. It was a little awkward working the French press in the morning in a kitchen with the host couple.

If it’s cheaper might be worth it to some

Booked one by accident last year in Foley. It was the "East Wing" of a DSLD house . My wife realized the day before we left. It was non refundable at that point and $400.00 less expensive than a hotel for 2 nights so we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised. The beds were comfortable water pressure was great in the shower. We only saw the host husband once for about 20 seconds he said good morning on he way to the garage. I would not intentionally book with a host again, but it was not a bad experience at all. We have had some really good laughs about that Air BB with several friends over the last year!

I do it all the time. I walk around naked in the kitchen/living room to establish dominance

A coworker stayed in one with her husband whenever they went to Charleston and said it was half the price of a hotel …and they were right in the middle of everything.

They were essentially there to sleep, and that was it, they were out and about doing things all day long.

Jesus Christ. Why does it always have to be about politics? Some people just like meeting others. It’s a good way to get recommendations for places to eat and go near where you’re staying. Or maybe just some people aren’t paranoid like you are?

Did it with the wife in 2020 for the LSU national championship game of the 2019 season. Things in NOLA were INSANELY expensive (obviously), and we knew that if LSU won there was 0% chance we’d be headed back north to the BR area.

We trusted the listing to accurately state a private entrance straight into the room. It was true. We maybe spent 4-5 hours in the room overall.

Very much worth spending around $100 for that night than whatever hotel prices were for that same amount of time.

Totally situation dependent IMO.

EDIT: some may have been able to beat the price surge a bit with planning. We had a one year old and stumbled on some tickets a few days prior. We took what we could get at that price point.

I live in a suburban area and can only host so many visitors in my own home. Hotels would be a trek and much more expensive. We’ve had a few family members opt for nearby airbnb within walking distance for much cheaper

It’s not something I’m seeking but I can see how it could be a viable option.

I don’t think many folks are choosing the shared space over the Hilton with most other (price, location) equal

I don't get it either. Hell I hate renting a "lived in" home and the owner is not there when I rent through VRBO.

Usually people getting a little help with the mortgage. A small part of it is the hippy, communal aspect as well. I knew a hippy chick who used to do it. Pretty sure she also banged some of her temporary tenants in the process.

We booked one like that when we were at a wedding in Annapolis. There was an entrance to our room straight from the outside (think French doors to a patio) so we never had to interact with the host if we didn't want to. She was an older lady who lived alone and had converted the room to a bedroom. It was cheap and it worked for us since we were only there to sleep
