Was it barrel proof?
I actually like my whiskey neat. I find drops of water and ice spoil it. Now if it's barrel proof I will add a few drops, but I don't care for barrel proof really.

While they both can reduce the proof of higher proof alcohol they have opposite effects on the aromatics. The water will help open up the whisk(e)y but ice, by chilling it, will prevent it from opening up.

What’s the prevailing consensus on mixing with a little actual soda?
Not coke/sprite, but actual soda water…. Actually, I use topo Chico… basically carbonated water. It doesn’t adulterate the whiskey, just thins it out a bit and gives it some carbonation.
