I love Louisiana. It’s heritage, the food, my family’s history there and my family that back in my home town, but I moved to Texas in 2014 and that sealed my fate of never returning.

I don’t plan on staying in Texas much longer, but it was and continues to be an eye opening experience about how terrible Louisiana is.

The poor local economies and lack of jobs, the terrible crime, the horrific infrastructure, the incompetence in state leaders, the landscape that leaves much to be desired, and most of all the lack of the local society taking pride in where they live. Something as simple as not littering makes such an impact on a small community.

I’ll go back to Louisiana a couple times a year for the rest of my life probably, but at the end of the day the best view of Louisiana is in the rear view mirror.

In ten years there will be more private security contractors in the major Louisiana cities than there are policeman. See Capetown South Africa and that is the future of Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Texas and Georgia. Plain and simple. Those are the two states that steal the most La natives.

Steal? I wouldn’t call it that.

Oil went to shite in the 80s. Lots of people left then. Especially to the Atlanta area.

When all your new brass resides in colorado, it doesn't look good.

I know one person in particular in their technology center that was laid off.

Louisiana has something like a 70% retention rate. The problem is, it's a lot of the people that we should want to keep that are leaving.

I couldn’t get the frick out of Dodge quick enough after college. Louisiana, was, is, and will be a shithole, and there’s not much on the horizon to suggest otherwise.

Louisiana would be a good study. Have all the people that pay in just up and leave, see how long these fricks that drag our state down last with out us.

Half this state is just unemployable.

A lot of people are forced to leave because there’s not enough jobs here. If you’re an engineer, those big companies often force you to relocate if you want to move up the ladder.

I graduated in '84 and left in '86 when the oilfields tanked. It was happening then with most people I grew up with.

that is the problem. the lower class mentality is just too popular

so there is no reason for any company to invest here (they won't get the quality of workers they need and the secondary effects of LCM, like education and crime, make any cost savings disappear)

there isn't enough of a productive/good population to invest domestically on any scale

the three top urban areas are crime ridden cesspools where you can't even rely on public education (and anything nice in terms of RE is super costly given the lower salaries)

the political structure is overly focused on the LCM population, to the detriment of any population that may wan to improve things

i don't think it's even possible for LA to change. at this point, we're well past the tipping point

My kid left the state for college and has no plans to return. More opportunities in Texas.

living and working in LA, as an employee, is a scary proposition

there are economic opportunities for individuals to start their own business, but as an employee? little future outside of very niche areas

That's awesome! Congrats

Thanks, Nurse. Don't have an exact date yet. Just looking forward to a place with actual seasons, better pay, lower cost of living, and good public schools with low crime. Plus you don't have to live in the suburbs to get all that.

I graduated in the 70’s. Worked for 3 companies since and have never been unemployed in New Orleans. Sorry so many are not employable

Texas and Georgia get the more well-rounded talent that La produces. Aka the smart ones who see it for what it is and realize the grass is much greener elsewhere.

I do the math for my friends and family all the time:
To raise your child in LA, by the time they graduate HS, costs you $200k.
Taxes
Private school
Insurance

All of those factors add up to $200,000.
It’s simply not worth it.

No decent jobs for college grads. I lucked out and got a job with a company based out of state, but will be working remotely from New Orleans. Searched for a long time for anything good. Companies in TX are constantly hiring new grads. Not so much in LA

Eta: Six months after graduating ME, I'd say around half of the people I finished with didn't have ME jobs. Some people were making $35-50/hr waiting tables, so they aren't in any hurry to start an actual career
