People from the Country of Colombia get offended when people from the United States

refer to ourselves as “Americans” or call our country “America”
I know several people from Colombia, and have had this same discussion recently, and they consider it offensive, lol. They are taught there are only 5 continents apparently, and that America consists of North, South, and Central America (1 large continent).
Now I’m curious if other countries get upset over this as well. I’d imagine Canadians and Mexicans would get offended if I were to refer to them as Americans, but maybe I’m wrong

I've seen this from some Hispanics. I remember my Spanish professor saying Canadians and Mexicans were also Americans.
But if you go to most parts of the world outside N&S America, and say you're American they're not going to ask do you mean Peru, Argentina, or the US. They know. Plus the US is the only one with America in the full official name.
