I once worked with this guy from Columbia. I didn't know him really well and some of his friends told me to go ask him if he was from Mexico. So, just to get his reaction, I did it.
I can't repeat on this forum what he said about Mexico and Mexicans. However, I would say that no member of the KKK has ever said such vile things about any black man who's ever lived.
If Jose is any indication, Columbians have a real low opinion of Mexicans.

I've heard this said by people from El Salvador. "We're technically American, too."
While it may be more correct to say that we are from the U.S., a big part of the world thinks of us as Americans. I had a conversation with a brainiac in Italy years ago that went like this:
Him: Where are you from?
Me: The United States
Him: Where?
Me: United States
Him: Huh?
Me: America.
Him: Oh, America!

Oddly enough, I’ve found either “the U.S.” or America gets the best results. “United States” fricks with people who aren’t great with English.
