hypothetically, lets say the homeowners saw some of the crowd carrying weapons and they just started shooting, no questions asked. what happens? Obviously lots of people will die and the rest will scatter, maybe one or two return fire. but from a legal standpoint, what if?

Have to have reasonable suspicion your life is in grave danger. Unless someone is shooting at me, or is in my house with a weapon and not attempting to leave, I’m not gonna shoot.

Disparity of force.
A large mob of people acting in a threatening manner is a justification for employing lethal force in self defense. I'm not saying this baw would have been justified to shoot, but it was awfully close IMO.
