Schools with enough resources typically have an "a" team and a "b" team so the kids that aren't quite as good can still play and learn the game. Seems reasonable to me.

Seems odd to me having one team for 6-8, quite a bit of difference between those grades

Why can't all of the kids make the team? Not every one is the same in experience or confidence at that age. With coaching players can develop their skill level and strength which breeds more confidence.

Couldn't there be a junior varsity team which could play games prior to the varsity game?

If so few 6th graders make the team why not just limit participation to 7th and 8th grade?

Our middle school recently had football team tryouts. We have about 800 kids in school.

Your middle school (6th-8th) has 800 kids? That must be one of the biggest middle schools in the state.

How many kids do they have in each grade and what are the class sizes?

That’s a huge damn football program, shite. My son’s school has ~325 boys from 7-12 and he had 12 kids show up for the 7th grade team, 14 in 8th…then lost 8 of those kids when it came to high school ball.

Hope they try out again instead of being butthurt.

We had a 6th grade team and a 7th/8th grade team when I was in middle school. Not having a team at all for 6th graders is pretty stupid. For one, they're like 12, they should still have a place to play even if they suck. Two, a lot of those kids could develop a little later and having one less year playing is going to hurt the high school team they feed into.

None of that excuses the parents whining, but it's pretty stupid the coach only takes a two deep for the entire team

I was cut from the football team in sixth grade; made it in seventh, and started in eighth. I'm not sure what the issue is. Getting cut hurt, but it motivated me to get faster and stronger. I also made the basketball team in seventh and eighth grade (started in eighth, and some in seventh). You did not make the football team as a sixth grader, unless you were had otherworldly athleticism or size. People are going to get cut; that's life.

I get it, but who has cuts in football? Keep everybody. Allow only the top 40 to dress out. They are missing out on developing their 6h and 7th graders. Baseball is different. Much more limited roster.

I understand parents being annoyed, but the kids need to suck it up and push on. My kid wants to play D1 and I’m sure I’ll take the rejections harder than he will…he’s just gotta get his head straight and perform as best ge can. Sometimes coaches don’t like you, sometimes other kids are better. Oh well.

Haha, very true.

I am not sure anyone actually gets cut in High School. There are 5 teams for 9-12

9th A
9th B
JV White
JV Navy A
JV Navy B
Varsity

I guess that is why the school has 6 state titles

Last year's 8th grade "graduated" about 245 kids.

This year's 6th grade has about 270 kids. They have 10 sections... 2 honors... 7 regular... and 1 for the slower kids.

The school population is growing by about 20-30 kids each year.

What isn't adding up?

Public schools in LA don't have a lot of resources. A lot of school districts in LA don't even have middle school sports.

There's a shortage of teachers and coaches, and running a second team takes more coaches, more equipment, more need for practice space, etc.

And you don't think there wouldn't be complaints about that?

"Oh little Johnnnny is good enough to bust it in practice but he can't even dress out for games?"

In Ringgold or Lake Providence maybe. In a growing district in the New Orleans metro? Hard to believe

Still doesn't make any sense that they would barely take enough kids to field a full practice. The more details you give the more it sounds like you're full of shite, tbh

They could always go to a small private academy like I did and start both on offense and defense and play every special teams every single year from 7th grade till I graduated high school

They're sixth graders. They don't need to be doing intensive strength training.

hit the sled, tackle dummies, do conditioning/agility drills... it's not that hard

t who has cuts in football?

I went to a pretty big public hs and our football program was pretty good, of the four big sports football was the only team that didn't cut anyone, a lot of kids could stay as long as they wanted to but would never put on a varsity uniform(except for yearbook/program pics,) when I went to LSU I was a walk on for a couple of years and I finally realized why the extra players were allowed to hang around, it was fodder for the 1s to beat up on and to have enough bodies reasonably healthy to conduct scrimmages/drills

Do y'all have multiple football fields to practice / play on?

How many coaches does each team have? Do the coaches coach on multiple teams?
