Is it possible that the best kids were in fact NOT selected?

No coach wants to cut a kid, not just cutting the kid but dealing with parents after the fact. It is 100% possible that a kid really had some really bad tryout or possibly even flared an attitude or didn't listen to instruction. The coach isn't going to cut kids that can help the team. If 40 are picked out of 80, then I would venture the majority are going to be in the top 50.

What are the chances that you guys actually selected the top 40 kids trying out? Pretty slim to be honest.
Need linemen too. Can't have a team with 38 skill players and no one to block or take up space to free them up.

There are plenty of cases where kids are cut because they are not good enough. There are also plenty of examples of kids making the team where they shouldn't because they are either well connected or kissing the coach's arse or whatever. So depending on how political the school is, they may have a valid point. Still nothing they can do about it and they should handle it better for sure. Such is life. Teach them that they should either get better or get rich.

We had a 6th grade team and a 7th/8th grade team when I was in middle school. Not having a team at all for 6th graders is pretty stupid. For one, they're like 12, they should still have a place to play even if they suck. Two, a lot of those kids could develop a little later and having one less year playing is going to hurt the high school team they feed into

You aren't wrong. I think it's a resource issue. They don't have enough coaches for two teams and they don't have enough gear for more than 40-45 kids.

My middle school did not have a tackle football team. My high school had Freshmen, JV, and Varsity. The high school these kids will feed into also has Freshmen, JV, and Varsity.

or because they "heard" so and so donated a TON of money ...then they will pick one of the last 5 players selected and let everyone know what their kid could do better.... this has been the blueprint for as far back as I know

rich kids write the checks... black kids get the tuition assistance... middle class gets fricked. don't ack like it ain't reel

That just seems like a horrible setup to have 6th graders playing on the same team as 8th graders

when I was a kid there was a max weight limit for 5th and 6th graders

Haha, you all go to to loser schools that do not like to develop kids and win state titles in High School

At my kids middle school (7th and 8th), every boy makes the football team and they run up to 3 teams if needed.

Middle school is where the development really happens for JV and Varsity later in High School. You can get cut at HS level, but every kid is given a chance to develop and prove themselves for 2 years.

Texas High School Football is a machine.

You can't measure jaxon's speed without the ball in his hands getting chased by a defender.

I heard that was one of the drills.

Jaxxxxon had blazing speed... until he tripped over the 25 yard line. Oof.

Our league was 5th/6th grade combined, and 3rd/4th grade. We had a 4th grade kid who had to play on our team because he was too big for the 3rd/4th league, there were also weight limits for ballcarriers

Being born into a family of coaches and teachers, parents are by far the worst part of the job from my observation. And it's not a new phenomenon

So they have an 8th sting left tackle or something?

I completely agree with your general sentiment, but why isn't there a 6th grade team? Even high schools have JV teams that will take pretty much anyone who has reasonable ability. Some kids have never even tried football until middle school.

I don't pay enough attention to how that works out, my kids are grown, I wonder how many ever see the varsity field in anger? I'm amazed that a kid would want to go through all of that for four years knowing he doesn't have a prayer of ever playing
