Worked as a supplier to this mill for some time, and their administration was packed with arrogant 'gimmee, gimmee, gimmee' assholes...particularly purchasing. By far my most difficult customer !

They were looking for workers there all of last year. Sucks for the new hires

Very much sucks. I know a couple of guys that just relocated themselves and families in the last year for planner jobs.(they had a lot of turnover in those positions)

The new hires were not exactly turning down ExxonMobil, Marathon and BASF. They went to GP because that's all they could get.

That makes sense especially for those already in BR area.
For those recruited from outside of the area, they probably were not privy to the bs going on . That’s probably also why GP had to bring those people in from other areas

GP has not exactly been paying top dollar. If you relocated from outside the area it was because you didn't have better options.
There are a lot of jobs out there for experienced people with backgrounds in process, mechanical, electrical, planning, etc. I understand it's a kick in the teeth to be lose your job. I'm sure most of these people will walk around in a daze for quite a while. However, in a year many of these people will say this was the best thing that ever happened to them. They never would have left that cease pool had they not been pushed out. I've been there.

Yeah any company owned by the Koch Brothers must suck. Sad irony in that conservatives are shutting down a plant in state that reliably supports Republicans in presidential elections, the House, and Senate.

Probably doesn’t have anything to do with the union slugs who are employed there right? Or the market? Or digital advances that change those markets?
Must be all on the Koch brothers.

At least for the engineers, you had to have experience working in a similar manufacturing facility (plywood/paper/containerboard). They were looking for very specific people. I never got hired on, despite spending time in almost every big mill that dealt with wood and wood products in LA and MS, and knowing the ins and outs of the operation and industry.
I actually wanted to work in that industry

Yet the Together Baton Rouge terrorists take the microphone at the Metro Council meeetings and say industry will never leave the area due to the river and infrastructure as they urge the Council and School Board to pluck and cook the golden goose by denying requests under the ITEP that Governor Honor Code screwed up. What’s distressing is that the members that want to do the plucking have to see all the shuttered plants on Scenic Highway north of I-110. River and infrastructure didn’t stop them from shutting down and going away. The people that actually live in Baton Rouge and plan to do so going forward need to run these paid hired guns from out of town back where they came from.

I’ve heard their workers complain about the way they’ve run it since buying it, but more complains about the a-hole manager they sent to supervise it and “change the culture”.
An inability or unwillingness to remove a problem manager still falls on ownership.

Funny thing is this mill relies on neither. They get their process water from wells, and they do not have docks. Seems logical that this would be the first business to pull up stakes.

These new rules are only for new exemptions. Was the plant planning some sort of new expansion / new equipment that would have warranted an exemption?
If not, your comment is baseless.

layoff of some 650 workers at the plant
Thats a lot of people out of work. The trickle down will have a negative effect on a lot of sectors of our local economy.

For those 650 workers in Zachary, what are their other options for work there?
